Techno Phantom Wheels

Hi guys,

Wanted to share the latest development to my Z and see what you think! :D

Managed to complete my set earlier this year with the addition of the rears to which an arduous refurb was needed:

Front - 14x7J +2 , 185/60/14 Toyo Proxes CF2
Rear - 14x8J -11 , 205/60/14 Toyo Proxes CF2

Car is on Gaz Gold coilovers all round. Not too sure on the stance of the front wheels, might try lowering it and/or fitting some spacers..

Looks just right to me ...

Is that your land on the other side of the garage there behind the car - I'd take a lot of persuading not to build another three garages there!

Another vote for things as they stand. Looks great. You got those wheels at the right time too, considering the deterioration of the pound vs yen recently...

uk66fastback - I don't think Nathan's particularly lacking garage space as it is, between him and his dad. ;)

Working on my persuasive skills for a garage with a ramp

Actually had those wheels since January Rich! Took some time to refurb as they weren't straight and some bad pitting on the rears especially. It was good timing for the other set of new 8J's which came over in June though... Lol

Odd discovery - the new reproductions by Hayashi of the Phantoms have a deeper inner barrel than the original production 8J's in the photo. Not sure why as Hayashi said they were using the original moulds. Can't be that the originals have been ground down excessively because there'd be no metal left, the difference is that big!

Its also mega useful to me as i'm going for some 14" wheels and have been wondering how they'd sit at the same width with tyres on, 60 or 65 profile.

Does look great.

Given the decidedly JDM wheel choice and stance, that UK front valance and lip and those horrid indicators need to go on the shelf for safekeeping and be replaced with something a bit more in keeping with the Eastern influence... (you know where I'm coming from here) :D

Or one of these lips:

Also where did you find the 205/60/14's?

Found them on Tyre Leader https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/

I actually ordered a full set of Proxes CF2's (a 'decent' tyre I could find that had both sizes I was after) from Camskill, but turned out they didn't have the 205's in stock.

Not had a chance to drive around in it yet so can't comment on the tyre quality / ride :( doing some work on it at the moment but hopefully should be done by the end of summer.....

Rich - I've never seen one of those front lips before... Where can you get them from? Anxious about altering bodywork, might be something for the future though. Just really want to drive it again!!!! Current jobs on it are why I haven't been able to attend meets this year - really wanted to go to Japfest, Donnington and Tatton :(

Front air dams don't really count as altering bodywork IMO as it is easily reversible.

The pic of the 432 shows a Japanese option lip. Fits onto the standard three-piece front valance. They pop up from time to time in reproduction form. I've lost track if anyone is offering these as a commonly available line item.

Doh!

Edit 2: http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic01a/50-1652

So, easily available. I wouldn't mind switching my car to that spoiler tbh. I'd need some nice valance panels too though.

Wheels are nice, personally I think it could go 1" lower at the front.

Also available from FRP Automotive in the UK (less shipping and no customs) because I sourced one to mold from.

Forgive me if I'm behind the times on this, but is FRP actually a functional, reliable business again, because it was effectively on hiatus for a long period was it not, due to health reasons etc.?

I admittedly like the look of it as it is with the signals above the bumper and rubber lip (probably a minority opinion) but I wouldn't rule anything out for the future and I agree I don't think it counts as body modification. I was thinking about the side mirrors mate.

Sean - why have you taken a mould of the lip from FRP? Are there improvements to be made?

Nathan your signals are below the bumper ! I personally like a Z with the rubber lip or GRP replica fitted & also like them with the signals above the bumper because that is how I remember them back in the day here in the UK.

I bought it direct from Japan - perfect !

So it can be sold locally (already less expensive at £90), considerably less shipping and no customs - probably works out at a lot less than half the price of the USA item on your doorstep.
