Tatton letdown!

Japfest and things of that ilk are a different order of magnitude though, and gain momentum from the inter-club component, i.e. joint Z Club/300ZX/350Z stand. Along with greater variety of activities, most especially track action. Donington Historic likewise, with Z Club/Z Register support and track activity (plus central location).

Tatton is a regional/local show (albeit a very large one). The core issue is a loss in participation/impetus on a local level. Something echoed across the country for all sorts of factors, like those I mentioned above. It's just the way it is. Sad, because I have some memory of how it used to be (and it was already in decline by the time I got into the Z scene), but if people have other things they'd rather do, can't be ar$ed, etc., so be it. Tatton's had its day (along with most other local/regional events where we might've had a Z Club only stand).

I'll get the Tatton forms next year as usual mailed to me, but if interest is weak, I won't bother booking a stand. I've kept it on life support for the last few years at my time (chasing people up) and expense (postage costs). Can't be bothered anymore.

As for the forum, it doesn't help that sometimes, people feel as though they are getting ridculed for comments or slapped down by know-it-alls. It puts people off posting things up for fear of being made to look stupid.

If someone posts up a question or an experience that they want to share, take it for what it is and provide something positive in return not use it as an opportunity to score points by attacking it or making derogatory comments.

Well said that man, for every one helpful member there seems too many sarcy off putting comments

Come on now guys may be a slight change in the thinking is needed

Since a lot of comments on what people felt was wrong with the site and some of the tones of the posts on here it has got significantly better with everybody now being a lot more genteel with the nature of their posts

Maybe rather than keep on with the way it was would it not be more productive to post up saying how much more enjoyable it was reading the vast majority of the posts now that people have taken on board the feelings of other members

I for one find it a lot more calmer and friendlier on here and I would like to thank all for their response

I do agree with your comment that it has calmed down a lot and I have to say that there is a mine of information and some good advice being given on various subjects. However it does account for the perception that there is less being posted up and less interesting subjects. Maybe some people have been put off by what went on before and no longer provide their experiences or ask what they consider pertinent questions.

Hopefully if discussions continue in the same positive vein, those people may return and add to the value of the forum.

I think there are two sides to this. Some people may have been put off posting because they felt they might be on the receiving end of criticism etc. However, equally, some are not posting advice because they perceive that the will be accused of being negative/blunt/superior etc. General result is that discussion becomes watered down and actually less helpful in some cases.

I'm not going into details, but there's a least one case relatively recently where I considered posting advice (backed up with discussion with more knowledgeable others) and decided not to bother because I suspected the poster didn't want to hear it, even though they were storing up trouble for themselves potentially. It seemed like too much hassle.

While some sensitivity is needed on one side, thicker skins are needed on the other. Hopefully, there is a constructive happy medium between the two...

Tin hat on, my tuppence worth....

I bought my Z to drive and to enjoy road trips that I just wouldn't bother doing in my day to day work car. It seems more and more organisers expect owners of classics to turn up and to pay for the privilege of forming the attraction, from which they profit.

If I am going to go somewhere, I want to have fun on the way (Le Mans classic etc) as well as having loads to do once there. Each to their own but the idea of turning up somewhere, parking and then just sitting around all day doesn't seem that fun to me.

There is unprecedented interest in classics at the moment and too many people are trying to profit from the bandwagon.

Fewer but better organised events are the way to go.

The reason I enjoy Tatton is that I park up my car for everyone else to look at and enjoy then spend the whole day walking round the show looking at all the other cars and immersing myself in the autojumble section. I don't attend it so I can just sit by my car all day. I contribute by taking my car but take more than I give by seeing all the other amazing classics that turn up.

Tin hat not required from where I am standing, never forget the large expense I went to to display my Samuri at the time CHL 117K at the NEC & when I went to the show on the sunday to have alook around & take my car home I was really peed off at seeing kids draping over my mint car with carry bags & stuff ! I was never a person for shows anyway my cars where for driving, it is just that I got led astray by the sad brigade for a short period.

We at least there are still enough people around to debate this issue...

What major events does the club actually attend and have a stand at then? I'm certainly keen to attend any events I can next year once I've got the car.

One car by itself at any show will always draw more attention, regardless of its rarity once you have several of one car at a show it suddenly doesn't feel as special or exclusive. I'm still yet to see any Datsuns at the Goodwood Breakfast Sunday meets that I like to attend, I'm sure once I get my car there it will get a fair amount of attention, once you get a lot of anything together its not quite the same. How many road legal cars do you imagine there really are in the UK?

I'm sure it can't be many, and of those few how many are willing to participate in the forums and shows etc. You can quickly start to see why its a more limited number of people, even my interaction with the MR2 Owners club shows this and there was massive UK production by comparison.

I also imagine that most do underestimate to power of social media these days, that seems to be in my experience forums biggest drain. Which is a shame as the forums are a far better resource and generally have a far better knowledge base overall.

Really constructive addition to the conversation there.

And when was the last time your car was on the road? Has it not spent more years off the road than on it?... :p

On the point about bigger gatherings at an event, I'd actually argue it's far more impactful than just one or two. Mainly because the cars are so rare, that suddenly seeing a lot in one place is often quite overwhelming and unexpected. Personally I want to see lots of Zs because I like looking at the variety and getting ideas/inspiration (given how most are modified/personalised in some way).

Big events for the club - principally Japfest (now at Silverstone) and Samuri Gathering at the Donington Historic Festival. It would be nice if there were more. There have been others that have fallen off the calendar like JAE, Japshow, etc.

Didn't go. **** weather, shopping to do, Olympics to watch!

Going to Time Attack at Croft tomorrow with Pmac and Skiddell, which should be infinitely more interesting. As long as weather allows decent run outs!

We'll agree to disagree ;) However I do agree that its always nice to see lots of them together! Its always great to see what others have done for ideas as you say, only problem is the modification/improvement list just gets bigger and bigger!

Sounds like I'm going to have to start choosing which car and club stand I want to be on for Japfest, MR2 or 240Z  Maybe I'll have to start doing alternate's lol. Maybe we should look at trying to being some of those back next year? I've never managed JAE yet, however Japshow would be good. There's also other shows here and there, I'll start posting up when I'm looking to attend shows and see if anyones interested I guess.

A lot of shows have changed over the years and some shows have disappeared and new shows have appeared.
A lot more shows tend to have a more broader appeal now as well, and there are a lot more forums about now and Facebook groups which if your not on Facebook is a waste of time.

Well Tatton was brilliant today! The weather held, the sun even came out a few times. It was packed with cars (and visitors) - and mine was the only Z of any kind in the entire show.
Therefore I had people swarming round it like bees round a honeypot.
Sometimes I just stood well back and watched just how many people wandered round and round it taking pictures - fascinating to see. Some of the time I got closer and answered questions - and was always happy to open the door and let the keen ones sit inside (something a lot of owners never seem to offer).
But most of the time I just toured the show and had a great time. Noticed the Toyota stand had about 30 cars on it! Mostly MR2s and Supras.

Dont worry guys.

I will be visiting my Z and getting some pics this week! ><.

:).

Apparently all welding has been done from the front all the way tho the rear arches including the floor.

Still a long way to go though....

Perhaps it seems like this community is dying because everytime someone posts something there are a bunch of opinionated arseholes ready to jump on the malicious wagon, and shine their views to every being, pushing potential new, and existing members away, hence why there is less participation amongst group members?

That is just my take on things...

All good comments, think the bum holes have gone Don so it's got boring like sum said and like mentioned why should I pay to show my car for someone else to cream the profits hence I didn't go to the Silverstone Classic a couple weeks back,it would've cost 54 quid to get in plus another 30 quid on juice, don't think so somehow.heading in the 911 direction myself, always threatened to,social media has its good points but as I've said many times that doing away with the mag will be one of the reasons for the demise of the club, don't see the usual faces anymore, they still have their Zeds ,up until 2 years ago we had a very strong turnout at the matching green classic car show which is free, now it's down to nothing

Because I got a pass into the show via the club it cost me nothing. Great thing about that is you can park right in the centre of the action and then go off to see the rest of the show instead of paying to park and paying to get in. Total cost to me about £5 worth of petrol.
