Subaru R180 LSDs

My first advice is don't get a viscous LSD and I'm pretty sure they didn't do an R180 viscous LSD , but would have to check my lists at home as I'm away in Canada at the moment,

Other advise is everyone seems to want a 3.9 but run 205/50/15 tyres so it's not really a 3.9 then more like a 4.11 ,( I'm sure I put up a spread sheet on here that works it all out for you before)

Finally work out what you want from your LSD , do you want more 'grab' get a clutch LSD and set it up how you want then but will equal more looking after also more expensive specific oil, or Torsen(basically a helical Quiafe) or SureTrak with normal.hypoid and no looking after

Hope that helps 👍

Doesn't say what type the first R180 is either , you can tell with the back cover off

Or you could get a cheaper R160 and with a bit of machining firsts right in , without the need for those inner adapter shafts

I'd love to see the spread-sheet please. :) ....when you get home or a link to it ?

Noted (thanks) for clutch and Torsen/SureTrak versions.

Scoobies are getting more rare now days as many people are breaking them up rather than selling because if they are not mint they are worth more in parts just the six speed STI gearbox conversion can cost up to 3 k - 4 k if done properly, ive got a uk STI blob with the pro drive fitted and also a JDM hawk wagon to which I was told last week is where the 3.9 diff comes from hence being rare
I’ve got a Quaife in my 260Z and doesn’t have a problem holding on to 300 bhp so might be worth a look rather than the Scooby diff if they are going up in value,The STI scoob has almost trebled in price for a good one over the last 5-6 years
my sti with the ppp is just over 300 bhp so nothing special compared to some of the scoobies out there, without the ppp package they are about 276 bhp straight out of the crate 0 - 60 time of just over 4.5 seconds and a 155 mph car, so mines a bit quicker than that,
my jdm wagon has the stronger 2 litre engine and has the five speed close ratio box which is fun
and don’t forge5 they all handle rather well

But I don't want a whole car and certainly not a blue 4-door.....I'd like an R180 4.44 plated (clutch) diff.

I got an R180 plated 4.44:1 Subaru diff for £500 in 2020. Had to make some driveshafts but used the sti wide shafts inner joints as they are larger than the standard and then Cosworth shafts and outer cv joints with the shaft re machined to fit the inner cv joint. A bit of machining but worth it for a strong set up.
I would buy another 4.44:1 plated diff if I saw one as a spare as they are getting hard to source and expensive.

.....what machining please ?

Right I'm back from holidays now ,

You just need to machine the Datsun inner to the same spec as the Subaru shaft, I also machined up a fixing to hold them together in the Diff for extra security.

Because they have twin spiders they are stronger than a standard 'open' R180 , I ran clutch R160 in mine for a couple of years and took all kinds of abuse

I couldn't find the originals on the forum (there here somewhere) so I have attached them again,

If you look at the first one you can see the MPH difference from each diff/tyre combo , It doesn't show the acceleration difference for each ratio but you can stick all the info in the second spread sheet and get all that
