Well, got her put back together in a hurry and into the car for the photoshoot.

The iPhone photos don't do it justice but unless you get close you wouldn't know it's got a little extra under the hood ;)

The good news is, she's working!!!

The not so great news is in my rush to put it back together I have wired the volume to the tone control and the tone control does the volume!! Also she's gone mono on me, I suspect I have a little wiring issue. She has to come out again anyway to finish off so I'll be looking into why. Never the less, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome - once sorted I'll need to upgrade the rubbish speakers.

Something like these ...

Also may use a coloured "gel" to hide the digits on the display when off and get a green tint going around it when car lights are on.

Can someone advise as to what the OEM radio was for UK supplied 240z's? 1973 to be precise. Have searched the forum and the Internet and I am coming up with the following model numbers. All Hitachi. KM-1520ZC, KM-1520ZD, KMS-4001 ZA, TM-1081ZA.

I am interested in buying one (preferably NOT working) and wanted the correct one for my car.

Many thanks

@Andrew - UK and AU spec cars seem often be quite similar so from that perspective I believe it's possible a 74 260z would have had this head unit.

Model: Hitachi TM-751Z

I didn't specifically reply to this thread to flog my wares, but I was doing my own research and came across this post and saw your question.

You can also see this 74 260z which is very original has the same head unit.

Good job! Goodness knows how you managed it. I kept the original 'rubbish' speakers in the back but bought an Alpine bass boost amp and speaker which now sits under my driving seat out of sight. Has improved the sound quality massively!

Thanks Mr Riddler. Believe it or not I was just working on it again the other night putting the finishing touches in, namely little green LEDs for subtle night time lighting in keeping with the rest of the car and tidying up the wiring. BTW don't let people tell you that you need a pulse width modulator to dim LEDs. If you take the time to bias them with an appropriate resistor at the forward bias point, then the car's own dash light dimming potentiometer works a treat. Will post more pics / details when I get the next free hour or two to play with Z stuff.

The sub under the seat seems to work really well in these cars - good on you for buying the Apline as they make great equipment for in car entertainment!

Having the kiddies and wife away for a day or two gave me a bit of time to play ...

Lighting duties taken care of with two green LEDs in place of the old lights which took a stupid amount of current! Wired them up to the car's own light circuit that came through the original radio plug on the loom.

I wasn't happy with the 8 segment display being visible in certain lights so I got some theatre lighting gel and covered it up - works superbly and reduces the glare at night from the otherwise overly bright display ....

Cables tidied up and connector block added for ease of future removal/tinkering.

SD card hole worked out well. The USB hole wasn't my neatest moment, but once in the car no one will ever see it!!

And finally got her in the car, the original mounting is an absolute female pooch to get to and get it in, but a lot of cursing later and some patience we got there. Here she is at night with the car lights on ...

The USB extension cable and 2.5mm jack come in under the ashtray. That way I can get to them but they are hidden when not in use.

The sound is great and the subwoofer fills in nicely and subtly over the exhaust. But having just been for a blast, I can't imagine the radio being used much except for on motorway driving to Japfest etc. Which was the main reason for having a half decent stereo in the car.

The bonus of course is being able to use the 2.5mm jack in the phone and using it as a hands free kit. Although I will have to keep the revs low so that the person at he other end can hear me :p

Thanks fellas. Took a huge lot more time than it should have but glad it's done, one less box in the study for my wife to trip over ;)

Rob, I know what you mean but I just can't stop grinning (like a 4 year old) at the noise it makes inside the car and with the windows down on full throttle :D
