Laughing my rather pert hairy Persian buttocks off!! Brilliant Steve!

Thanks guys, Great to hear your experienced advice! I do have a spare mech pump I bought but never got round to fitting, so will have a pop at it when I get a spare 28.5 minutes and let you know if it improves the start up.

HI
From the vid sounds like fuel starvation. Try removing the fuel pump and actuate it manually loads from cold one morning until you feel the petrol is pumped up to fill carbs.Re fit and try a start then if that works. replace the diaphragm or the whole thing.

Dean Halsey.

Just listened to your vid and although it may seem at odds with others, I still think it's spark problems. I had exactly that before changing the sparks to BPR5ES. The other thing I noticed is that you are pumping the throttle. I find the best way to start it is to keep your foot flat on the floor for a few turns to allow the fuel to pump through then let it off until it starts catching, leaving the chokes to do their job. Then put it back down half way when it fires to keep it going.

Of course, can't guarantee success as every car is different but works for me.

No need to remove the fuel pump to test it. Just disconnect the hose from the metal fuel lines on the outlet side of the pump and put it into a clear plastic bottle. Put that somewhere in view whilst you turn it over (dont forget to disconnect the coil HT lead first to stop it firing). You should see a strong spurt of fuel every turn.

Hope you sort it.

Not wishing to sound like im teaching you to suck eggs, but is it wise to rev an engine that high from a stone cold start :D i guess the extended cranking on the starter will lift the oil pressure more than for a normal 2 to 3 second start tho ;)

That's fair comment. It was all under 3k RPM, don't be fooled by the exhaust sound and I do often think the same. But I find if I hold it sub 1500rpm for the first 10-15 secs it stalls again so I tend to blip it up and down rather than sustained higher rpms.

Always welcome all advice / critique of technique ;)

Sounds like you have some running issues never mind the starting?
It shouldn't stall below 1500. Have you checked or removed the little in pipe filters just before the float bowls?

First thing I'd do is see if it will start and run from cold on easy start - friend spraying it in to keep a good flow. If not then compression or more likely ignition or possibly big air leak...

I've known air leaks into the intake when cold which 'seal' as the general engine bay warms up, worth double checking everything on manifold for leaks - spraying wd40 around the manifold when the car is running..

Is the choke mechanism working properly...

If you can be ar5sed, then disconnect the fuel pipes to the carbs and pre fill them with fuel from a jerry can...

Is it an SU type carb where you can lift the main needles with the air filter removed, before you attempt to start it. - I've known them 'stick' when cold when they get old and worn....

Cheers
