Spike Anderson, Samuri

Regardless of all the handbags-at-dawn drama associated with Samuri, what a brilliant day that was at Donington. That line up was fantastic.
That it was Rich. It was great to see such a line up and be part of the day

His non-attendance at the Samuri meet was a shame if he was invited, but maybe adds to the ‘mystique’ of it all!

Is he Banksy?

 No, not Banksy or the IR.
I think more a combination of age, health and cost. Wish he’d come over though, it would have been interesting.

surprises me how someone who was dire at paperwork and records can as the years pass remember more and more alleged details

My dear old Gran (long since deceased) was the same. Ask her what she did yesterday and she had no clue, but ask what she did on a particular Thursday in 1943 and she'd give you chapter and verse!

If she was driving a red and brown pedal car built by a 4 year old - we may have found the real No.1

What still amazes me is that despite after 25 years of silence and suddenly remembering more 'true facts' about in period details, the supposed register is still a joke.

JK

Still the same old same old dispute between two basic parties which has been going on for as long as I've owned one of these cars (that's about 30 years now) and was old news then, let alone now.

And what might have changed in the last few years ?

The soppy rom-com version of me - would like to think that - that this is an attempt to put right what is an interesting and dare i say important legacy .............

I'd be proud of how my cars are so recognisable and are so readily talked about - so why not ( Tom Hanks can play Spike and Meg Ryan can be SUX 990H) ?

Having read the first book - the update does seem to paint a very different picture - I dont recall any of that being in there and smacks a little of sour grapes.

The cynical version of me - would look at the refrences to business names , trademarks etc . and see this as a financial opportunity - and again why not?

S30 values rising and general interest in the cars doing the same .
Samuri Cars trading at £60k ( even ringed 1969 fakes )
MZR creating a 'homage'.

Has Samuri 'stock value ' ever been higher ?

If I owned intellectual property rights to anything Samuri - is this the time to cash in ? Would they not be worth more to someone else with a more active outlook for the future ?

And what better way than a renewed spat with an old business partner who is involved themselves in a new enterprise wanting to do the same .
A brief legal challenge - out of court settlement and sell any rights ?

I may be way off the mark . I may be somewhere in between .

I like the cars ... and the story more ( ill buy the new book as long as its not about Dixieland Jazz ) - and look forward to the next installment .............

fwiw, a trademark you own isn't enforceable if you're not trading.

“And just in case they are under the illusion that Samuri were not involved with any commercial activity after I had taken out the trademark, they would be completely wrong.”

“During the time between leaving the UK and the acquisition of the trade mark, the company has continued to trade in my 3 car workshop underneath my house which is fully equipped and also has a fully operational head shop. I have done many heads, have had created three Super Samuris and built a prototype future product which, regretfully, due for unforeseen problems, we were unable to put into production. Samuri conversions has continued to tick over despite me being in Spain. During the last 5 years I have produced 4 cylinder heads for customers in the UK, supplied a replacement 240Z Block, another interesting c/head for a 280Z turbo, written 2 books and now halfway through a third.”

He seems aware of that .

Are they selling at £60k? There’s loads always advertised that hang around forever, there’s the Kevin irons cars that seem to be less than half that. The generation who are paying for them, are shrinking in size. There’s not a future generation who will see value in them, that’s an important factor.

all part of the smoke and Mirrors.

Let’s enjoy them for what the are and what they did, not try to create what they’re not.

“There will never be any more Super Samuris, which is why I took out the trade mark in the first place, thus keeping the existing examples very exclusive and sought after Classics of their time. I am also pretty sure that the owners of these cars would agree with this sentiment and hope their cars stay as exclusive as they are now”

I think Spikes main point, as he says earlier, is that it’s over. It should remain what it is and be a closed book. It was of its time.

And the new picture from the front cover of the book looks remarkably like one of mine from Donington a couple of years ago, reproduced without my permission

Ah, Jonathan, school boy error! you should know, post anything on social media and unless you state it’s not to be reproduced without the owners consent it’s fair game!
Could’ve made millions! EXTRA:)

Maybe - but I reckon this is more like it
