Looks like a perfect event for the Southern crew! Who's interested?

PH 'TALL SHIPS DAY' SUNDAY SERVICE: 07/08/11

A nautical-themed PH meet at Southampton docks - drive, sail or power in!

There's nothing quite like being beside the seaside, as you know. With this in mind we're proud to present this extraordinary Sunday Service meet.
On Sunday 7th August the Associated British Ports, Southampton have agreed to open their gates to at least 250 PH cars (and possibly more if needed) from 15.00 - 19.00 - all thanks to some Herculean efforts from PHer Andy Spark, who works for the Jubilee Sailing Trust.
Thanks to Andy, we'll be parked in the area usually reserved for those travelling on large cruise ships leaving the port. Alongside the parking area with be the JST-owned Tall Ship Tenacious, a £14million vessel built in 2000 which has the accolade of being the largest wooden ship to be made in the UK in over 100 years, and the largest vessel in the world to be made of laminated construction. It's a boat to be admired and we'll be allowed on board to take a closer look from 16.00.
The meet starts at 15.00, meaning we'll be able to welcome Tenacious ashore when it docks at approximately 15.30. The usual Sunday Service rules apply: Arrive, park and admire the cars before heading to get some food and drink from the bar on board Tenacious, while having a good look around the ship itself. We'll also be running a raffle to help raise money for JST with some fantastic prizes up for grabs.
Prizes include:
  • A trip with one of the port pilots on the bridge of a large cruise ship (hopefully Queen Mary 2) as it comes into Southampton
  • A tour of the engine room of a container ship where the engines are three storeys high
  • A turn in one of the huge container forklifts based in the container terminal
Well worth entering in our opinion!

The Jubilee Sailing Trust was founded in 1978 and offers the chance for people of all physical abilities to be able to enjoy sailing on the open sea. They specialise in allowing people with disabilities to be a truly integral part of a sailing team by focussing on their strengths. No guest is treated any differently either; they all need to work hard to sail the vessels. While this event is not a hard-nosed attempt to get you to donate, there will be some great opportunities to do just that. Both the ship tours and buffet will be free to PHers, but there will be a donation box on hand for both and we encourage you to donate as you see fit. All proceeds will go straight to the charity, of course.
The itinerary for the day is as follows:
1500 - PH car park opens
1530 - Ship arrives - sailed by PHers! (See below)
1600 - Ship tours commence
1700 - 1800 Food is served
1800 - Live band & beer for those who want to stay.
Go for a sail on Tenacious in the morning!
For those that want to do more than have a wander, Andy has offered to take PHers on a morning sail, arriving back to the port at 15.30 to be greeted by the Sunday Service taking place alongside. Space is available for 50 people leaving at 08.30 priced at £125 per person. Children over 12 are permitted when accompanied by an adult. Remember that this is one of only two boats designed to cater for disabled guests on equal terms, so this means access is fantastic for all, young or old.
You can even turn up by boat:
For boat-owning PHers there is also the opportunity to moor alongside Tenacious for the night, or just for the afternoon. If you are interested in the sail, or the mooring, please contact Andy directly on andy@jst.org.uk
As per usual, you'll need to sign up on the calendar to guarantee a space at this meet, click here to do just that.
A map of the dock area can be found here
P.S. We'll still have an August PHSS at a manufacturer's venue (details to be announced), but when this came up you'll agree it was too good to miss!)
P.P.S. Did we mention the Jubilee Sailing Trust?

My favourite has to be the Unimog, its one of those odd vehicles that I have always wanted.

Where are the ship photos?
