Dynamat xtreme is about 1.5 to 2mm thick and is relatively light, easy to lay and cut. Its butyl with a silver layer.

Yes its bling but once you have the carpet over it you don't see it anyway.

If you are going the whole course you need another layer on top of the butyl mat, which mainly stops drumming, its the second layer you put down that cuts out the noise. This usually consists of a dense layered foam.

Richie's method is very clean and oem looking. It depends how far you want to go.

Interesting, most people put down the sound deadening then carpet on top. What dense layered foam would you suggest?

I used Dodo Mat - a UK company that produces the butyl sound deadening and the dense foam layer. Worked well.

I would highly recommend removing the factory sound deadening as I found moisture had gotten in-between and caused some surface rust under there.

I agree with this on both counts. Do your research on sound deadening, the butyl sheets do not absorb road noise they remove panel vibration. Dodomat is a good 2nd layer for road noise, but it doesn’t shape too well on complex curves and the weight mounts up.
There are other products more suitable for the bulkhead that are also heat retardant.
None of it is particularly lightweight, but you don’t need to go OTT with the butyl sheets, 50% coverage should get you away if ur worried about weight.

As has been mentioned, there are a variety of different brands out there.

On my other classic, I have gone for Dynamat xtreme for the first layer and then dynapad on some areas and dynaliner on others. It does add extra weight if you go the whole hog.

Each layer is composed differently and thus reduces different sound frequencies.

I used Silent Coat MLV and over the top in places such as floors and door cards added 3mm dodo mat closed cell foam.

When @Woody928 came to visit and we went for a drive, he was impressed with how solidly my doors closed compared to his.

What I like is the fact that pulling the windows down makes a significant difference now on wind, road and mechanical / exhaust noises.

Interesting subject, I'm not sure you can really do this job properly without adding weight!

I personally don't give a monkeys what it looks like as you'll never see it under trim and carpet so I'd be looking at the modern options which are readily available. I've used silent coat in a number of areas on my 240Z as it seems to be a good cost effective option. Dynamite extreme certainly has great reviews and the reputation to match, if budget isn't an issue for you. How far do you want to go?

My car has silent coat patches added across various areas (particularly the large panels) which has helped considerably.

Moving up a level, as Ali says, his car is a lot quieter than mine. He's also got the closed cell foam which makes a considerable difference and absorbs a serious amount of sound.

Up from that I have a friend who's used dynamat extreme everywhere, giving a full coverage. I've been told that this is total overkill by a number of people however the results really spoke for themselves. His car is incredibly refined by comparison to mine, that said he's now carrying a huge amount of extra weight as a consequence.

Horses for courses...

p.s. if you do it, then don't forget to do the roof. My roof has a full coverage of dynamat and it made a considerable difference!

I've no experience with any of these materials so don't know how heavy it is. When we say "huge amount" are we talking 10-20kg or something in total?

More I'd estimate, I reckon you could easily add 30kg+ of weight in just dynamat extreme to get a full coverage before adding any foam layers of anything else on top of that which is a big part of it if you wish to do it properly. A bulk pack like this is just under 10kg for 3.34 square meters.

With your level of build Jon, I'd be tempted to actually line the outer wheel arches with it and then use dinatrol to seal the lot in so that you never see or notice its there and get the best deadening results.

Ultimately for the extra comfort it offers, I'd go the whole hog and then just fit a bigger engine to haul it all around without noticing the extra weight ;)

Agree Woody that's what I'm doing.

My dash has never been out but now thinking it's got to come off since I've gone this far and the bulkhead is the worse area for heat and noise. Can of worms !

You could always take off the diff cross member weight to compensate :p

I recall the late Mr F. saying that many had removed it in the past without noticeable adverse effects. I figure if Nissan engineers deemed it necessary, who am I to argue ;)

I agree with that last comment, the Nissan engineers for the win!

This isnt on the Z its for my Citroen DS, ive gone looney with Dynamat, i dont want to keep track of the cost, ignorance is bliss!
