Snapped Tension Rod. Darn it!

That doesn't sound right - surely you should be able to fit 195/70 x14 under the arches easily? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Yes I would have thought so too. I had 215/60/15 and my offside just touched on full lock (PO had been driving it like that!).

So is 195/70/14 Ali's tyre size?.

Tim - another thought: when you jack up the car on the broken side, is there a lot of movement in the control arm bush itself?

Yes, its free to slide up and down the rod and there's some play when wiggling it from side to side. I measured the rod diameter (16.2mm) and bush hole diameter (17.36). It was also free to move around a bit in a circular motion when placing it back on the body bracket. I assume, maybe wrong, that the slack is taken up when tightened. Also in the pic below of the offside the bush does move out slightly at the top when jacked up. Not sure, but hope that gives you what you were looking for

Just out of interest, the pic below shows where the nearside rod snapped (the offside is not looking too smart either) and what I think happened to the washer.

Looking at the offside rod, I definitely need to replace both. I think I've got my head around the options. The point raised about the stock rods available being secondhand and therefore unable to guarantee condition is very valid. I'm thinking Ball and Socket from Mike with secondhand rods or Techno adjustable. The latter solving sourcing decent rods

Guys, I may be 'up' for upgrading my rods.

I would like something adjustable for length - mine are currently 'spaced out' for max castor.

Which rods where you thinking of Rob?

I've emailed TechoToyTuning this morning asking for a total price and lead time and will contact Mike shortly.

Tim, I'm not sure which ones to go with. I need adjustment for Caster but like Franky says are rose-joints durable enough for the position they are in on a road car?

Experience of techno toys equipment guys?

a question, not a challenge  why do you want adjustable caster?

You might want to consider these:
http://www.swmotorsport.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=98

I've never met the chap nor purchased any products but I know many owners have.

Many thanks Peter. I’ve fired off an email to obtain lead times. If anyone has these, would be great to get some feedback.

I’ve received a response from TechnoToys;

These are in stock and ready to ship. General delivery time is 6 to 10 days via DHL.
Our website should calculate shipping for you during checkout. Shipping should be no more than $89 to the UK.

Thus, the total be roughly $329. Not bad..

The more I read and chat with people, my rod snap seems to be quite rare, more common on the 280z. With the Ball and Socket Kit plus rubber bush I’m assuming there’s less tension on the rod, thus a stock rod and the kit sounds a good option. The Techno adjustable seem the ultimate solution, but as Rob said it would be great to get some feedback from those using them. I too had wondered about the rose joints.. (Thanks Rob, I know what they’re called.. great.. learning all the time). In the meantime, I’ve ordered the Ball and Socket Kit from Mike. I’m going to try the kit out on the rod that is intact (strip it back to metal and inspect) and see how it goes.

If anyone is interested in the kit, Mike has limited stock so now would be a good time to order.

Really want to experiment with this at the weekend and post up finding.

I know Mike’s sold one recently, was that you Ali? ;)

Because DJ has set my car up with a lot of Caster (Castor) which gives increased negative camber on turns. There are lock-nuts on the ends on the rods but only half the nut is on the rod. I want a long rod so I don't run out of thread and also so I can adjust the caster without having to resort to washers.

The car drives very nicely and it's great to be able to adjust suspension to get things right. Would a manufacturer build cars with standard length track-rods?

LOL - not me Tim! This is what I've been buying recently and it doesn't fit the Z ;)

What I am going to do is get the rubber ones on, assess the difference in space between wheel and bodywork, go for drive and see the difference. Then decide how to spend Le cash. Given the consequences of this thing going pop, I'm very much leaning toward replacing with new metal. Especially as I don't pussy foot my Z.

@Rob - just got in from work and checked - 195 70 r14 91 T

Makes sense - but I don't understand the question "would a manufacturer build cars with standard length track-rods?"

I like the look of the SW motorsport ones, very correct looking.

those look quite chunky

Yes they look ok and are new metal but £130 and no joints.

Agree, for me they look a good option, they're closer looking to stock as Franky says and as you say Rob, it's new metal. What seemed limited options just a few days ago, we're getting quite a choice. Brilliant.

I'm waiting to hear back from MotorSport on lead times. If you're interested in these Rob or indeed anyone else and our chosen rods coincide etc. I'm happy to multi-order, maybe we can save on postage.

I have some news on my side, will post in a sec. A very kind Z member has come to my rescue!

TBH I was a bit in the doldrums this morning. Moaning to my wife that it’s bank holiday, the Z is on stands and I ain’t got no parts.. :( I thought, can’t sit round all day moping, I’ll clean the oven!.. haha

Lo and behold, a PM outta the blue from a club member reading ‘was out shopping earlier and picked this (pic below) up for you just in case’.

Bloody awesome!.. What can I say..

Gets me back on the road, can try out the ball & socket arrangement, gives time to look at possible alternatives and now likely to get to JDM.. Awesome!

These have been 'pointed out' to me and I really like them:

Those look good Rob. Good price too

OK Tim a new one for you.

Having torqued up mine to the specified 40lbft, I went for a drive today, stood on the brakes to test, all good. Came up to a roundabout and braked and there was a clicking - went round the roundabout and heard the tyre rubbing the front valence again! Grrrr.

Got home and under the car and decided to tighten as much as I could and the nut went a further centimetre. I put the torque wrench on to check how overnight I had made it and it's clicking out at 43lbft.

I can now get a locking nut on. Tried the same on the other side and no chance! She's stubbornly there to stay!! But that side has plenty of clearance.

Moral of the story? It needs to seat after tightening. Go for a drive, take some tight corners, brake hard, re-tighten!

Enjoy!

Ali, do you do realise that the length of the rod determines the caster and also your toe-in?

Ali can we get some pictures of how close either side wheel is to the valence. Also what are you using now Poly bushes or Rubber?
