Short Stroke 2.6

Just wanted to know whats involved in building a short stroke 2.6 engine, I've heard that I would have to use a 240z crank and a 280 block is this correct if so is it a straight swap and what else would I need?
Thanks

It's 280 pistons for sure, but I don't know whether it's the crank or the rods that you need from a 240. You should purchase the "How to modify your L-Series Engine" book from The Z Club Shop, it'll tell you all you need to know and more.
Personally I would just go 2.8 and be done with it. You'll get more torque from the longer stroke, and it will cut down in-gear acceleration times.
I am in the process of collecting parts so I can build a HOT engine. It's a while away yet as I have a few projects on the go. It will be built around a late L28 block (so flat top pistons) and an E88 head fitted with 44mm inlet valves. Wild cam, triples, header blah blah blah...... Should be a flyer !!!

As far as I am aware you need the crank and the rods from the 240 donor engine.
The point of going this route is that you still retain the revability of the 240 engine, which is one of its great joys in driving. In my humble opinion fitting a 280 engine into a nice 240Z just destroys one of its most enjoyable traits.
Obviously this does not apply to the idea of putting a 280 engine in a 260Z as you have already lost the short stroke in the stock 260 motor.
The old adage of "there aint no substitute for cubic capacity" is in fact a half truth.
The situation with Z series engines is mirrored in the Mini Cooper S series cars which had 970, 1071 or 1275cc engines .
I am fortunate to have built and owned a number of rally cars in the late70s and early 80s using these engines. While there was never any doubt that a full house 1275 bored out to 1293 was the most powerfull mini lump I have only good memories of doing a couple of seasons with a short stroke 970cc screamer which would happily rev to 8000 and above at the slightest press on the throttle.
A nice lightweight 240Z with a good breathing short stroke engine? That'll do for me!

Thanks for the advice guys I am a the moment running a late F54 L28 block with flat top pistons and a ported and skimmed head with triples and cam etc. The car goes well but I think it could be made to rev more freely as you say pmac, I think a short stroke 2.6 will be the next beast type engine I will build hopefully along the same lines as the mighty Samuri.

You say triples Zed2k, what size are they ?? For a 2.8 with 44mm inlet valves you really should be running 45DCOE Webers (or equivalent). If you have smaller - say 40's, it could be that the motor is just struggling to breath properly at the top end, and hence making it feel unwilling to rev'. The pay off with the larger carbs means you may loose a little throttle response lower down the rev' range.
Also, taking away some of the engines inertia by lightening things (pistons, rods, flywheel) will make the engine spin better.
I agree that sweet rev' happy engines are lots of fun, but they tend to have to be kept "on the boil" as it were. So more gear changes are required, which can become tiresome.
I suppose it's down to driving style at the end of the day, but I love the mid-range punch you get from having more torque. It's a little more relaxed, but equally - if not more - fast.
Sorry, but there ain't no substitute for cubic inches boy

You are right Zedhead its all down to personal taste.
I tend to drive my 240 in the same style as I used to do in my mini days.Great FUN . The 240 is a fun car to me and when that experience fades it will be time for me to pack it all in.
The next time I have a 280zx auto breaker I will send you the auto box. That way you wont need to change gear at all!!!

Ha ha pmac !! I asked for that didn't I. So I am a bit lazy on the cog swapping, but an auto box ? no no no no no !! That is shear blasphamy.
Opinions opinions opinions. Which is exactly the point to these forums. Great stuff gents - keep it coming.

Just remember guys, It's not all about size it's the way you use it, I've recently driven a Ford Thunderbird 4.6 litre I think It was way slower than the Zed.
I think 45 DCOEs will only cause my bank balance to drop and I don't think I will see much increase in performance. As I say I'am only thinking about building a peachy motor as I have abount 4 engines in various states.
Thanks

I seem to remember having a similar conversation with a girl. My point to her was, "bigger is better, as long as you know how to use it". Am I drifting off the subject here ??

How did I know that was comming, Doh, never mind, I suppose If I'm honest I would like to fit a small block V8, just to see what it goes like, but I would'nt want to modify the car that much, so for now I'll stick with the L series engines and remember there's always NOS for extra power.
