Do we have any recommendations for a 'system' of two cameras and recording box?

Plus interface with my phone.

I've got a bunch of srihome cameras which I think good value. they email me a photo when they see movement and record a video to a micro SD card on the camera. On your phone you can watch the pre-recorded video or watch live etc. you can also get alerts direct to your phone.

I’ve got ring system, does everything you need so does the simply but their subscription is a lot more expensive,Swan is suppose to be good
Got that fitted as lots of dog nappers out there,I even take pepper spray and rice sticks when walking the dogs now it’s got stupid, people are getting mugged for their dogs
Razor wire on one bit of fence soon ,if I could electrify it I would but might get in trouble for that

Screenshot_20210520-195239.jpg I have a canary camera, detects movement, night vision, checks temp, humidity and air quality, you can view live feed from your phone, talk to the room/garage and set off an alarm. Connects via WiFi.
Footage is saved to the cloud.

Hi Rob.

Depends what you want your camera system to do. I can’t recommended any ‘brand’ as they all have system vulnerabilities your progressional car thief will probably know how to exploit.

If your looking for a simple deterrent then any wifi camera like a Ring/Siri or set up like Baz has that stores your camera footage to the cloud for storage. Look for a product that frequency hops or is dual band(wifi either 2.4 or 5 GHZ). Older and cheaper cams will tend to be running just on 2.4GHZ and these are pathetically easy to disconnect from your home wifi with a £5 wifi module off eBay. The 5GHZ connections can be disable but your thief would need to be more intent on nicking your wheels as a dual band ‘jammer’ for want of a better word will cost him/her a couple of hundred. But again are readily available and are very effective. You are more likely to notice the effects of this as these devices will take down your router connection not just the camera. They are meant to suppress mobile phone signals in a limited area, like a conference room etc. But can also suppress wifi if you want to be nefarious. Any device that relies on cloud storage will be vulnerable in this way. Local storage is preferable to cloud storage, but even that can get nicked.

I have a wired camera system with a solid state recorder. It provides connectivity to your phone via wifi to check on your wheels and provides alerts and all the usual nonsense. But the main thing is the recordings are available on hard drive should the connection to the cloud be disrupted and they keep recording as well, unless the power goes down obviously. Costco do some good entry level stuff that’s not to expensive. If you want to spend a little more and are more serious/paranoid about security. Get some advice from the many security companies that specialise in surveillance and security equipment for the best kit to buy.

Thanks guys, useful stuff. I want it as a deterrent to try to stop someone entering my house. I want them to think it's too secure to try?

I prefer hard-wired systems but of course they are a pain to install. I had a wireless alarm system once including sensors in my garage - the batteries failed and even though the alarm was 'armed' thieves stole my lads MotoX bike. I found out after that the system relied on me interrogating it to check battery life - it should surely have warned me!

I have been recommended Hikvision cameras - any dealings?

I use hikvosion systems and would recommend them. If you look around you will see them installed everywhere.

So John, are your cameras hard-wired for power and audio? Do they go to a 'recording box'?

Are they easy for someone like me (not an IT expert but can get by) to configure, set-up and use with my smartphone Galaxy A41.

Do you have you have external, internal or both?

They tend not to publish a price.

Cheers.

As with anything this has now got involved and expensive. It's not just Datsuns!

2 x Hikvision colour cameras at £160 each (£200 fitted). 2nd generation colour.

1 x 4 channel 2 TB box £420

So with VaT about £1k. Wife thinks just sticking cheap cameras on the house will do, I don't.

What do you hope to get from the 1k investment that a cheap camera won't give you?

Hikvision are cheaper than most competitors but are rapidly becoming 'persona non grata' in the commercial world due to fears regarding the integrity of the manufacturer. Having said that, for a purely domestic installation they should be fine (I doubt the Chinese government are interested in the contents of your home).
