I heard that some of these scams are made deliberately obvious because if someone does respond they are usually a good person to scam. They're gullible, infirm, desperate for money, etc. so are likely to be taken in and end up handing over money.

It means the scammers don't get a load of replies from people who won't be taken in later on.

Exactly right Paul. Our forensic investigations unit confirmed many cases of this. Their success rates are much much higher with this segment.

Additionally, they do the obvious social profiling and collect little bits of info which can be used to build a profile of you from open internet sources.

Case in point, I had £25k fraud on my credit card - all they needed to pretend they were me and identify themselves to the bank (7 years ago) was my name, address, email and mobile phone number. All of which is very easily found if you know anything about me. Much more so if you dig out a utility bill or bank statement out of the bin / outdoor letter box of the London flat I lived in.

Lots of people (including my old self) used to say I have nothing to hide, I don't know what the fuss is about privacy. You will never fully beat it but you can minimise.

One last example; my 78 year old dad doesn't have an email address, mobile phone or credit card. He received a bailiff's letter for "his" payday loan default. I went to their website and all they needed to give you a loan was name, address and Date of Birth. No checks!!!! For anyone else's benefit if this happens: I called them and told them I was recording the call for my solicitor, asked them to verify why they had taken his details without checks and balances and what proof they had that it was indeed his loan. Then I got them to put in writing that they are cancelling the debt as fraud the same day as my next call would have been to the banking ombudsman (who fine them for being referred regardless of the blame/outcome).

If they profiled him properly. It’d be something about 45 missing samuri v5’s, a collection of 1960’s Nissan race bodywork, followed by something involving garlic and soft cheese.
