Seems to just be a one off but who knows what the future brings....

Doubt a modified car will ever reach those levels, only OEM original style cars will command those kind of premiums I would speculate!

I think you're right. There are a LOT of people with a LOT of money in the US - and these cars are pretty rare ... they DO keep appearing though, there's a lovely red one much like my own that the same seller will have coming onto BaT very soon. His FB pages shows the lengths they are going to to get it as good as possible.

Sahara is the new 918!

Edit: when I say much like my own, the colour and interior are the same, his car is at a different level condition-wise

Ended a little lower than I projected but very good price for that I car.
Interesting that the winning bidder is a repeat buyer for the seller's Zed cars, must have really liked the previous car he won.

My impression is that this particular BaT auction was a peep through a window into a self-congratulatory room full of faux enthusiasts who are more interested in building a 'portfolio' than in understanding and loving the cars, and who think they are on to a good thing.

One of the under-bidders apparently has a collection of 80 different cars, tells other buyers they need to "commit the $$$" to win, poses at "Pebble" and calls his Ferraris "4rEs". When people like this are buying these cars, my reaction is to either batten down the hatches or lower the lifeboats...

Quote from your friend on BAT ' Is it just me ..or does it seem like Alan-T has 240Z envy.. all his post seem to be .. Skyline..Skyline are superior.. I own one ..so they must be the significant Nissan build .. I may be totally off track here and if so ..I am apologizing in advance.. but for me Alan-T just seems to be slightly bias against the Z car .. but as I always say to each his own. '

I was a little surprised that you did not bother to defend yourself from this accusation on the thread which was surely way off the mark or track as this particular 'I am Mr.Big Car Collector ' was apologising for in advance

Apparently Mr.Big stopped bidding on this car as he couldn't decide which of the 29 'series one 240Z (sic)' in his collection to sell to make space for this new one. A tough decision and definitely a first world problem - that or he was going to have ask his wife's permission to buy a bigger warehouse ! He obviously needs to grow a pair. Modesty, discretion and class are not common over that side of the pond.

Only over in the States do they refer to S1 240Z - although I have heard people mentioning that BS over here too, so it is catching I am afraid. I always put them right or make my opinion known !
They never refer to the cars as S30 or HLS30 or HLS30U.
They don't get 'Alan-T' - he goes over their heads ;)

Believe me I was replying, but the comments are pre-moderated on BaT and it seems that they allow some of their self-certified high roller chums to make ill-informed and inaccurate personal comments, and then they bin any attempt at restrained reply.

One particular Z owner who frequents that forum does like to regularly remind everyone just how many 'Series 1' Zs he has ... which I always inwardly chuckle over. This time round he let everyone know the number of other collectables he has also ... amongst some of the BaT high-flyers who like to compare this kind of thing it might impress but it's willy-waving of the silliest kind.

That said, I do like the good cross section of cars that appear on BaT - if you're a seller, as our own Saccy will testify, it's a very good way of getting decent cars in front of the right people (ie, mostly those with the disposable).

There are some genuine, not-so-in-your-face Z aficianados on there (again, Saccy being one), we mustn't forget that - and you can usually suss them out pretty quickly and listen to their opinion, as opposed to the ones who just like to go about their OWN cars.

Sorry Chris - hard to view on a phone in the wind and rain this morning.

And I drove a 'series 1' stock USA-market 240Z - it wasn't 'fun' - I'd have a euro stock version anyday for the driving experience.

In essence, they were the worst and Nissan merely improved them.

Tell all all why they were the worst?

What I do not understand is how everyone says, there's not many left in the states, they sold a hell of a lot there, I can only imagine there'll be a steady stream for many years to come?

Why don't you list how Nissan evolved the Z from the early 1970 cars 'til late '72 ?

Rear diff position
Gearbox
Hatch/rear-wings ventilation

etc....

do you think there were improvements, cost savings and adjustments of a mass produced car?

They evolved all the way to the 280z? so are you saying thats the 'best'?

Oh and answer the question :)

Yes and consider the lillies (sorry, wrong quote :p), I meant the JDM versions over the years.

They didn't evolve here as the 280Z - that was merely 1x export market.

They were the cheapest as an export Z, the dumbed-down, soft-springed etc hatch-leaking, diff breaking 3-speeders but with an o/drive. They were priced and therefore made to sell in quantity. Nissan tried a different tactic exporting to Europe and I'm not altogetehr sure that it was successful even despite the import quotas, taxes and lack of dedicated Nissan corporate staff......
