There have been a few on eBay lately. I bought one of them and no it’s not for sale I’m afraid. Just need to keep your eyes open.

As Mark says, they are rarely going to be "clean" - they are twenty year old gearboxes. Functionality is the most important aspect. And, cleanliness-wise, you have to remove the bellhousing anyway for replacement with a modified Z one, so do what I did (and will do on the two other S13/14 boxes I have) and have the bell and the tailshaft housing bead blasted. It's relatively easy to remove the tail housing; it just needs to be thoroughly washed out with a pressure washer, etc., to make sure no media remains before you put the gear set back in!

Ok.

I’m torn between buying and fitting either a 260z gearbox, 280zx gearbox or going for the S14.

I know the S14 will end up costing a lot more. But unfortunately my 240z gearbox crunch’s in 1st and 2nd.

This may seem like a daft suggestion - have you bled your clutch slave cyl? Mine used to crunch in 3rd until I did this. I was totally convinced it was synchros but turned out to be some air!

are you explicitly excluding S13 boxes? I would include all (? maybe!) FS5W71C boxes in your search.

This is the eBay search I use for interesting gearboxes. It picks up quite a lot of junk but most of the interesting stuff too.

(s13,s14,s14a,200sx,ca18,sr20,180sx,240z,260z,280z,280zx,300zx,z31,fs5w71,fs5c71) (gearbox,gearboxes) -auto -automatic -bmw

why? whats wrong with a normal RB box? The cd009 has issues with excess of torque, might be worth looking into.
5 speed and they are all knackered, they were a disposable item to 500BHP skylines.... they are also not so cheap now. I had a R33GTR with 450BHP myself back in the day

Just stripped an S14 box and mod’d a 240z bellhousing to suit this week. Really difficult to machine the bearing housing in the bell up to larger required diameter, even in a big workshop there was nothing large enough. The box was a gamble, £140 from a guy in wales who’d had it sat for yrs, but it seems to be a minter.

How did you machine it in the end ?

Ended up with a really long end mill in a CNC Miller, but it’s not a tool ud normally have. Ideally a big lathe and face plate with a long boring bar.
