Running Rich

My fuel injected 78' 280 is running really rich. Where do I start to diagnose the problem? And are there any adjustments that can be made to the airflow meter?

Leave the airflow meter alone unless last resort! Check:

1. Check that air filter isn't clogged up! Take it out - don't just look at the top - there might be last winter's leaves or a mouse nest underneath!
2. Fuel pressure - high pressure can lead to rich running
3. Clamp hose to seventh injector (assuming you have one in your format?) - this is the only way to be sure that it is not leaking. Just unplugging it is not enough.
4. Check the parameters of the the ECU water temperature sender and the thermotime switch (if fitted). ECU sender could incorrectly signal cold running on an otherwise hot engine giving enrichment. Thermotime switch controls the switch off point of the seventh injector.
5. Ensure that the other six injectors are clean, firing a nice spray and not sticking open...bit more work involved there as they will probably need to be dismounted, professionally tested and cleaned.
