Cheers peeps, nice to know who to ask when it all goes wrong :)

I hope that the door was still open slightly on the third pic giving the impression of bad alignment.

Thats how much filler was in that rear quarter

nah, the doors are bare, so have no lock mechs to hold them shut ;)

Blasting? I wish
Used a 4.5" hand grinder with a sander/flapper disc wheel on the large areas
Drill and wire wheel on the smaller cramped areas

Way I see it if it takes me weeks to sand it down and do as much of the donkey work as poss then thats £'s saved in body shop fees

Its the way I did various bits and pieces on my rebuild. I feel your pain. How many wheels and wires you got through so far then :D

Thanks go to Rob G for helping me find a bonnet
Been after one for ages, even if it was a mission to go get

Looks a n.o.s genuine one aswell :)

Not wanting to fill the garden with any more dust I thought i'd start on the inner rear arches

What a mission they are

Still atleat I found a handy use for that rotten arch :D

Slowly getting there but not sure how much underseal needs taking back?

Some time later .... :)

Sills, o/s door and door shuts more or less all down to metal

Both rear inner arch's before por15 treatment

Bought me a very handy B/D finger power sander file thing
Just the job for getting into all the shuts and up and around the gutters

Broke the 3 supplied sanding belts in a day mind lol

Also had a go at the rear slam panel and lower panel.

Got the lower panel so it can be cut out

Mystery of the rear slam panel also figured out - its been made out of 3 diffo sections !

Started with a wire wheel on the front inner wing, but nothing too drastic... yet :)

Thats all good progress ... its definatly one of those "In for a penny, in for a pound" jobs. When cleaning the engine bay of my Z31 I almost cried when stripping the paint off and finding more rust patches. However the end result when it was all clean and painted was so worth it.

Cheers
Yep the engine bay is still to come, but I need to turn the car around for that
Then the engine n box can all come out again
The list goes on :driving:

er, the garden started to look green again after that rain :)

After today its turned black with underseal.:D

Still another day so onwards n all that

Both doors off and posts down to metal.
Also got the last of the paint off around the shuts n under the gutters

Started on both inner archs, front panel and both inner wings

Not much room to swing a grinder in there, so just done what I could get at

Front panel came out well mind :)

After 7 hours of it grinding and sanding I couldn't do any more !
I gave up :D

Top effort buddy. I bet your arms and hands were tingling after all that ... and even with ear protectors I found I was ringing a bit when doing the same.

Its always scary doing it at first, but after a while I found it looked kind of cool afterwards and you always have that thought in the back of your mind that the end result will be so much better because of it.

You could say that
Even when stopped all I can hear is a zinggg, bzzzzz of the grinder in me ears
Didn't use ear protectors, even tho I should

what are you protecting the bare metal with after sanding cos you dont want it oxidizing again

Tbh I’m not and that’s my dilemma
If I cover the body back over how will the body shop know what needs attention
Thinking if I can strip it back soon enough it isn’t going to make much odds?
It's already 30 odd yr old so an extra month or so isnt going to matter ?

To be honest just before you send it off you can go over it again to take the surface rust off. It should only be powdery at the worst.

Ok fair enough s'pose the body shop will de-oxidize it then etch prime it or maybe do the repairs (dents and things) then etch it, can't remember how i done mine now mr moggy steered me in the right direction
