I stopped using powder coating when building this car, I found it can cause quite a few problems with things being very tight to fit, And bolts coming lose because they don't torque up properly on the coating.

But your stuff looks great.

Rob

Thanks Rob i alway tap out the threads.

Thanks Rob i always tap out the threads.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, I tap out all my threads as well but it's the powder coating itself that's can cause problems, I found that sometimes the bolts can come lose after a month or two of use, Not quite sure why but it happens.

Dave may be saying that he taps out the threads after powder coating?

As do I ;), But it's not the threads that cause the problem's I've experienced it's the coating itself ;).

Just check all the bolts periodically is the best bet just to make sure they're staying tight.

Ok, thanks for the tip, not too familiar with the actual process but I wonder whether putting a bolt tightly in the hole and then powdercoating the item can solve this, as you just unscrew the bolt afterwards, anyway I digress....

Mr G, I think the finished job would be spoilt when the bolts were unscrewed, it would crack the coating.

I had a motorbike frame powder coated and it was well worth the trouble and a really resiliant finish but as Rob says some tolerances can be affected by the thickness of the coating.

Nice job Dave.

On a couple of bolts I had to cut the powder coating off with a flat bottom drill bit to just clear the area where to bolt sits, But some other bolts where fine so it's just worth keeping an eye on things until you're sure it's all staying tight.

I can tell you why Rob, its because the mating surfaces that have the coating on (not only p/coating) over time will fatigue, classic senareo ( iv'e seen it) 44 ton artic fresh of the production line goes to the paint shop for wheels off paint job in luxury silver then laquered ready for the truck show, gets bought by a local haulier to go to work 3days later three wheels fall off on the M1 reason wheels torqued down to 500ft/lbs 150 hours later paint coating compresses leaving the wheel nuts loose, theres not many areas that i can think of on a 240z that could cause a problem but maybe the mounting surfaces on the xmember and front chassis rails, under bolt heads with washers ect and any flat areas that bolt together i reckon you'll be ok Dave
PS your care ooses patience and detail

Great new is that the car now has a slot to be painted so it was all hands to the deck to finish off cleaning up the engine bay after the stich welding and around the old battery tray.

Off to Tweeks tomorrow to pick up a few more bits.
