This is a dam funny thread.....

Of course in Cali, any assumption as to sex based on a pic or name is strictly forbidden. They have laws against that here....haha.

Yeah, like up until recetly you couldn't mention condom and p*nis is a dirty word....which is ridiculous, it only depends where you follow it.

Hi everyone,

I've just purchased my first Datsun and it's a complete restoration project.

It appears to be very solid, engine is free but it hasn't been turned over yet.

I'm guessing the first thing on my to do list will be to get the engine fixed up, has anyone got any top tips for this?

As you can see from the pictures, there are some parts missing, these came with the car but are currently in the boot.

I've bought a Haynes manual and have a few beers at the ready, what could possibly go wrong.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Natalie,

Welcome! Good luck with the restoration :)

Wow thanks for all the welcomes and messages, sorry for the late reply, I've been having a few computer issues.

I'm hoping the pictures have worked this time.

Thanks for the advice Sean , I'll bare it in mind next time I'm shopping for toiletries.

To clear up any confusion the bloke in the photo is Mark, my other half and co-owner of the Datsun.

We picked her up in the Netherlands but the guy we bought her from imported her from California so little worry of rust, we still had a good poke around underneath before committing though and everything seems solid.

Planning on doing a standard restoration but not sure yet whether we're going to stick with the original brown or pick another colour used on the 72's.

We live in Armitage Bridge but are looking for a workshop or unit to rent for the restoration, does anyone know of anywhere around the Huddersfield/Holmfirth area?

Also, I'm a bit confused with the paperwork side of things. I've notified HMRC, do I need to register it now with DVLA or do I wait until we have it road worthy and MOT'd?

Mostly all looks to be there which is good. Those carbs look like they've been off recently ...

Maybe the same time they took the CA smog stuff off ... ? Dealer-fitted aircon stuff is all there.

You will need to register it once you have the car MOT'd. Youll have to fill in all the application and send off the NOVA form etc. Wuite easy now and turn around is very quick, sure it took me less than a week last year.

Do you need to send a nova form off with the application? It doesn't mention this on the form and I assumed that once the car was registered on the nova system, they could easily check if duty had been paid.

Thanks for your advice guys.

As for the engine, should I replace the timing chain, tensioners and water pump etc. or keep them if they seem in good order?

We're going to need a full set of hoses, where is the best place to get these from? Can they be found in the UK or do they need to be ordered from the states?

'seem' to be in good order ?

Assume nothing and change :

lubrification
cooling
distribution

then go around and look at everything and anyone in rubber and see what ought to be changed
