Project Candy Begins (rb25det 240z)

I had intented to but I may be putting it behind the passenger seat or in the cubby hole.

I was planning on using something like this but still need to do the calculations to see what amp/h I need.

I have been considering putting mine in the passenger footwell. Behind the seat is good in some ways but it may affect seat adjustment and voltage drop.

I've read nothing but great things about them. Hopefully they will be powerful to fit my needs. I'll be using led bulbs everywhere so that should help a bit.

I wouldnt want to put it there as I can see a passenger using it as a foot brace for those "oh shit" moments [emoji1787]

Yeh ok. I have a footrest plate which is for those moments. There is a battery space behind it.

I quite like this placement.

Fits well there doesn’t it, I like it. I was millimetres from replacing my lead acid with that but the merchant’s card machine failed at the car show. Only read good things and the weight saving alone is worth it.

Having witnessed a couple of battery cable shorts and the dramatic after effects, I wouldn’t want that much energy / battery cable inside the car in case of fires etc. Should (God forbid) the car be in an accident and the battery cable gets damaged / shorted, that stuff is sitting in the car with you and in close proximity to you. Just a thought!

Having said all that, my Q5 battery and voltage regulator are in the boot (same for BMWs)!! So what do I know. ;)

It does sit in there nicely. Would be nothing wrong with lining the cubby hole with a fire retardant material. I'd prefer nothing in the cab but I think it might be the easiest place to slide it in. Also keeps the engine bay cleaner. Can also have a handy battery cut off switch within reach with no messing under the bonnet.

Many, many race and rally cars have them mounted in the passenger compartment and they get knocked about far more than a road car will. A properly secured gel type battery should be fine.

Well the last two days have been spent refurbing the R32 GTR calipers ready to fit the car. They weren't in a horrendous state to start off with but nothing good enough to go on the car.

I've degreased them using my makeshift set up and stripped the seals out.

After sandblasting.

Once they were blasted I've sanded diwn the Nissan logos with 180 grit followed by 400.

Then onto spraying.

After 4 coats of black I left them overnight. This is when I made my first mistake. I used masking tape around the logos when I was sanding the paint back and when removing it, the tape ripped a load of paint off. Damn.

The other three calipers I've sanded carefully without any tape and thankfully they turned out OK.

The screwed up one got sanded and I'm repainting it. The others are now getting sprayed with clear coat and being put in the oven for a hour to fully cure.

[emoji1696]fingers crossed they turn out OK.

Headlights

Whilst sandblasting the brake calipers I thought I would do the headlight buckets and seats at the same time. I was very unsure what I wanted to do with the buckets. Either yellow zinc coat them or paint them black. I decided on black which fits in with the plan I've got for modernising the headlights.

I've chosen the JW Speaker LED headlights as I'm after modern headlights sticking with my theme of bringing all the car components upto date. I didn't want the headlights looking out of place on an older car so I've gone for a black version which will hopefully hide them a little or atleast make them blend in.

Everything was primed with grey then painted in satin black and satin clearcoat. The finish is great but I'm not 100% sold on the colour. I think the double satin has turned it a little grey. I can live with it though. Next time I'd do satin black with regular clearcoat.

The new adjusters were very tight fitting and I had to sand the ridges and finally hammer them home.

Then installed the new lights.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the retaining rings yet. Have them rechromed or sand them and paint them black. I'll see how they look on the car once I've had it painted.

Looks good to me.

If you had done satin black and then regular clear coat then it would turn out gloss.

It's taken a month but the engine is finally back from the machine shop.

The guys have said they found zero issues with the block and head which is great news. They don't think it's done many miles. The only thing the noticed was the ring lands and grooves were very dirty and filled with carbon.

This will be this weekends project.

Slowly getting there with the engine. Pistons in and head on. Unfortunately I've been sent the wrong camshaft oil seals so I'm waiting on parts now in order to continue. Story of this project.

Nice new shiney oil and water pump.

Rear head drain/breather fitted. Went in nice and easy.

Since I'm waiting on parts to continue I started tidying up the wiring on the rear lights. Concidering they are new repros the wiring is shocking. I'll be putting new superseal connectors on them. The rewiring lasted 5min and the new solding iron packed in on the first use. Back to screwfix for a replacement.

Atleast I've found a new home for the battery. Just waiting on getting the mount and that will be properly test fitted. Sits quite nicely in the rear cubby hole. I've ordered a kill switch and bulkhead connectors to pass the power through. They will be mounted behind the passenger seat. Will also have the main fuzeable link there.

there is room behind the engine on mine but putting the engine in will mean more swear words I think with that at the back

You could always fit it after the engine is in? Pretty much a mandatory mod from everything I've read with RBs that will be driven hard.

Little bit more work this weekend. Engine is slowly coming together but the more old bits I add on, the worse the engine is starting to look. Even after cleaning the parts. I think I’m going to have to paint the timing cover and get a new crankshaft pully/harmonic balancer and cam angle sensor.

The wiring on the rear lights has now been tidied up. Just waiting on some new washers so I can fit them.

Has anyone got any suggestions for cleaning cast aluminium parts? I’ve tried degreaser, carb cleaner etc. Does white vinegar work or should I buy a proper aluminium cleaner? I can bring myself to put parts like this back on the engine.

Vapour blasting gets the best results in my experience. Otherwise I've seen good results will Brillo pads and lots and lots of elbow grease.
