Mark, How did I just know that you'd be the first one to respond? So who are you, what do you do, is that your 250 GTO rep?

Wyn is transferring the plate as we speak but I've got "884LBJ" that might go onto it otherwise might stick with the normal numbers. Might buy some black and silvers for the shows......ahem!

The first plan is to give it a good italian tune up and get it running really sweetly. I want to get the clutch control sorted as at the moment at idle, it's got more judder than a bottle of Metz! I'll have to check the threads to see what clutch Wyn put in.

The exhaust needs lifting or alternatively I might let it wear through and then maybe go side exit although it wouldn't sound as good doing that with the TVR combined headers. You need seperate manifolds exiting either side to get that glorious Cobra off beat pulse.

Nice to see the car has found a home :)

Side exit looks nice, but ask Ben Stapley how loud a side exit is inside a cabin :)

I'm working on my 250 :) Its not mine in the picture... but I plan something very very special when I finally get round to doing it :) Its something thats never been done to a Z or ferrari replica (as far as I know)...

I just need a garage to work on it as right now I'm renting on the quay side and the porsche drivers wouldn't look to kindly on my working on a car in the communal parking area! ;)

Well I've Overheated!

Out for a drive with a few chums and Tom decides to play to the crowd by thundering out of the petrol station and down the mile long straight. Get to the end, park up, tunr the engine off and wait for the others to catch up.

Hmmm.....funny noise, being one of hissing rather than the usual whirr of the electric fan. I hop out the car and wince...........she's bleeding!!!!...

....Coolant although not very much of it. Bonnet up and start investigating the fault in a highly professional manner:

a - Tap fan - NIL
b - Shake fan motor - NIL
c - Tap fan motor - NIL
d - Wiggle entry wires - NIL

Crikey, that's the extent of my electrical knowledge. I then braved the rest of the loom and traced the wire to a junction and a twin fuse.

e - Wiggle Fuse - RESULT!!!

Cue large smile, closed bonnet and two dark lines down the road out of the village.

What's happening then? I have a track day booked at Keevil in Wiltshire for August 7th if anyone wants a gander. I'm really worried it's too loud to get on track though.

Round five of the zclub Drag Race Challenge!! There's allways a good turn out, and for a tenner you can have as many runs as you like.No noise regs of course. It's just a 'Run What You Brung' day so low key, 90% street cars including 240/260's Z31's Z32's etc. If it rains we just park up in the cafe while they dry out the track!
See you there?

I got left for dust last night by a Cerbie. Maybe I should upgrade to an AJP V8 from the Cerbera?!!!!

Do you just drive round looking for random cars to race at the lights or something? :D

Do you have a cap?
Do you wear Burbery? ;)

My cap is indeed check, more of a tweed check than burberry though and kind of flat in shape!

If I wanted a drag racer I would have kept my Cobra, truly, truly fast. The AJP V8 won't fit (Although I'm sure Wyn would fins a way) so I'll stick with what I have. Have decided to take it along on this track day and will probably get turned away for being too loud but friends ae going in a variety of fun machinery so I'll be able to have a drive of them.

Mark, your car history is truly shocking, thank god you've seen the light and bought a Z!!

First test on track

Well, as promised, I turned up on track in my beasty V8. Having gone through all the options open to me in terms of reducing the sound eminating from the back of my car, I decided I liked the current sound too much and thought I'd risk it. Friends of mine were on the day with their Caterhams, TVR and M5 so I was sure to have a good drive in a car of some shape or form.

I turned up to Keevil Circuit in North Wiltshire to be confronted with 45 cars, 37 of which were Caterhams. Cripes, looked like I had my work cut out. First things first, I had to pass the sound test, a rather restrictive 100db at 4500 rpm. As I raised the revs past 3,000, it really started to bellow. "Cripes that's loud" was the comment of the tester. This wasn't looking good. As it passed 3500, the bellow turrned to howl. 4500 and up goes the finger for starting the measurement..........

98.6!!!!! Skin of my teeth.

This was somewhat helped by the fact that the Datsun rev counter reads 4500 whilst the TVR engine is probably only doing 3500. Shhhhhh!

Next thing was to dial in the adjustable suspension from fast road to full race and what a difference it makes, the car corners so flat.

Some pictures of the car on the day can be seen here:

http://www.photodirectuk.com/MSE2006/09 Keevil 7th August/08 Datsun 280Z/index.htm

Sadly the photographer hadn't the education to know that mine was in fact a 240z rather than a 280z. It went very well around the track. A bit of understeer in the tight corners (Most likely due to low tread on the front nearside tyre) and then the LSD kicks in allowing a very tidy pick up towards the apex. Feed in the power and off you belt up the next straight. Give it the whole pedal at the apex though and you can undertake glorious extended powerslides, keeping the power nailed until the back comes back into line.

The Caterhams were, of course, all over me in the corners but up the straights I soon pulled them in. But eerrrrm, let's not go into braking! The brakes certainly need some braided hosing and some race fluid (Next project)and I'm seriously thinking of going all out and buying a whole new set-up.

The car certainly drew a lot of attention all day with all manner of suggestions as to what the car was and what was powering it. Bonus of the day, was a very nice Z club member who had come all the way to the track day just to see the car. He has a V8 Z too (3.9) and had some useful suggestions on set-up. If you're on the forum, many thanks and hope you enjoyed seeing it on track.
