Oil Filter is Tiny compared to 240Z

Serviced my 370Z this week. The oil filter is really small, probably about one sixth the volume of a 240Z filter (yes they are exceptionally big). Same as Micra apparently.

Also the 370Z Filter is changed every 9000 mls, the 240Z every 3000 mls.

So why is this folks - engine bay space?

Any advantage in having a big filter - surface area of filtering material perhaps?

Do modern engines and oils need less filtering?

Not sure if this is correct but I think small filter are better for oil pressure, both keeping it high and avoiding large fluctuations.

Bigger oil filter would have more surface area so I'd imagine they can take a lot more dirt to I guess as todays engies will run cleaner and the oils are a lot better that the filters don't get dirty so quickly therefore running a smaller one wouldn't be a problem. ?

It's the same filter they use in the Micra! :conf2:

I use the K&N HP 1008 rather than the Nissan one (not sure if it's any better but it makes me feel better - and it's easier to get off because of the 'nut' on the end).

Do you do an intermediate oil change too Rob?

No I don't, running one of these is expensive enough ;)

If I was giving the car a hard time I might consider it, but it couldn't be treated easier!

I must be more paranoid than you then! I like to see clean oil in the car, but it doesn't stay clean for long.

advancement in oil technology.

The oil filter has no bearing on the oil pressure. It is there to prevent any bits of **** from being pumped into the galleries and bearings.

Mineral oils produced a fair bit of rubbish which formed a sediment in the sump and could easily be picked up with the oil. Therefore a larger filter was used and shorter oil changes.

I use the smallest filter I could find on the 240Z as I am using fully synthetic oil and have had no problems at all. ( I know I am not doing the mileage but the engine is working hard)

My thoughts only
