Noise Detecting Cameras

Coming to a town near you (already in my town).

The local constabulary now have a new toy to play with the public. £50 fine if your car is a noise polluter. With luck it will have some impact on the local ‘rev the nuts off my car at midnight‘ brigade, but we shall see.

What will it mean for classics and classic owners with load exhaust system remains also to be seen as well. Little I would hope.

Article from FJ is interesting if light on content.

Says in the article, noisy classics wouldn't be hit with fines unless they were doing spirited driving? But only for Chelsea and Kensington council..

What happens if your car, which is totally stock, causes the noise detection to give you a fine?

Its a bit of a daily mail article. The won't generate enough revenue to cover the cost, so councils won't persist. The ones out there currently are funded mostly by the developers.

'All cars built since 2016 and sold in Europe must meet ‘Individual Type Approvement’ (IVA) and be no louder than 74 decibels, when accelerating and changing gear in relation to the placement of the noise camera microphone.'

I'm guessing you will be going a bit too fast if you're making a lot of noise..........................

I'm all for taking tints out of car windows so I can see who is driving and it can be recorded on dash cam and other cameras. Tint the back windows as much as you like but not so we can't see the driver.

I’m having to retrofit a factory reverse camera to the new Q5 in the stable as the rears are so tinted that reversing out of my parents drive in the pitch black is dangerous! Have to put the rear fog lamps on to see what’s behind.

Gone off serious tinting! Great for the kids on sunny days, an absolute pain for anything else!!

Having been black flagged at castle coombe I need to coast past the noise cameras in the Z!

They are coming, I read an article a few months ago where they are developing an AI powered camera system which can calculate speed in real time video feed so in theory can catch us speeding across a much wider distance than the current fixed cameras....

Got to love technology for technology sake.
