A bit of a left field suggestion how about one of the older mercedes (2000 ish) 3.2 straight six oil burners, plenty about, bullet proof 200 bhp as standard with enough torque to restart the earth turning, the nicest thing about them is they sound amazing.

What BMW has Terry Taylor got in his 240Z? I know he supercharged it in the end.

For the 'cool' factor, I would have to agree with Robbie J's suggestion but if it's a cost conscious build then BMW looks to be the best bet.
RBs have become ridiculously expensive over the last few years, mirroring the price of Skylines.
You used to be able to buy a complete RB26 for around 2.5k GBP but nowadays you can barely get an RB25DE for that.
There was a time you could buy one with a car attached to it for that money. What it would have been to have a crystal ball!

The m52tub28 engine is great, I'd even say it's the best engine by bmw when it comes to said compromise between reliability and performance. Very easy and cheap to maintain, with some mods it'll output 210hp (running one in my Z3).

Adapting the gearbox will be challenging I guess. The shifter linkage might need to be modified if it doesn't fit by accident.

correct.

you've got to be careful in the choice if you want a nice feeling engine. s50 range would be ideal. On carbs if you're brave/cool enough! EXTRA:D
Yes, as previously discussed togetehr (thanks) they're great engines BUT....:

a) not if you don't want 300bhp
b) they're currently selling for 16x the price of a 170bhp M52B25 :

In an S30 destined to weight 980kgs, 170bhp with a low-ratio diff will be plenty fun methinks.

I couldn't find any NA headers for an RB when I was looking

Not the same as the Rocky Auto ones but there are some available.

I'm going to Rocky Auto and Trust kikaku. The later has a few fields of R32s/33s and 34s
to buy a new 5 speed box in Japan is £1200 anyway BTW.
