Thanks SKiddell, Rob, and pmac.
I've obviously come to the right place for some expert advice.
Think i'll go and do some reading before i make any more decisions on the engine build.

probably have been better buying a motor from Robello Racing

Like I did then!!

There is plenty of useful advice, not just from Pmac and Skiddell, so take your time, have a view of ideas and do some research and decide.... it would not take much to have a good solid 2.8 without too much expense, just need to know how to do it. Its not always about shoving some parts in, they have to work well together. There are plenty of choices out there, but not all cut the mustard.

Looks like a neat install. 8mpg seems very low in such a light car even for a chevy?
Is it running correctly?

Convert to run on Gas?

It seems such a shame to undo all that work.

Yeh ... I know :( but it was always my intention, even when i went to look at the car, to put a datsun back in. Ive had it over a year now and I've decided to bite the bullet and hopefully i can do the car justice with a nicely built l28. I want to end up with a car that i can use on a fairly regular basis on long distance classic touring events so nothing too wild and certainly not one that needs its own fuel tanker on tow ;)

Made my final decision on the engine build and most of the parts are here :

F54 block 20thou overbore flat top cast pistons
N42 head 30thou skim, 3 angle valve seats, head ported and polished, gasket matched
Schneider 274F camshaft 480 lift 274/274 duration, new uprated springs, retainers and lash pads
triple 40 webers on twm manifold

Not decided on the exhaust manifold yet or whether to use my 280zx box or the borg warner t5 that's currently in the car.

Just hope I end up with some good usable power :driving:

Hi Smokie
You had better add new rocker arms to that list. They are pretty expensive I believe these days!!
I reckon that may be quite a thirsty engine, more power always means more fuel burnt!?
When is you car going off the road? for the engine build and transplant!

Cheers
Andrew

Hi Andrew
Car hasn't been on the road this year, its tucked away at the back of the garage waiting until I get the new engine built. The engine is with a local machinist and he commented on the lack of wear on the engine !!!! crank unmarked, big-ends and mains virtually no wear and the block could have got away with a light hone. I've asked him if a light resurface would be ok on the rocker arms and he thinks they will be fine.
If I can get somewhere around 15 mpg on a run I'll be happy, if I get less than 15 then my wife will be unhappy :)

Smokie,
You may find the 40's too small, esp. further up the rev range as the cam comes in. Maybe worth considering 45's (or 44's mikuni's)... Driven a tuned 2.8 with 40's, struggled up the rev range.

Lets hope they are big enough Ian or there will be a set of 3 new 40dcoe's for sale :(

Did you buy them from Euro Carb Ltd? If still unused see if they will allow you to return for the 45s. I guess they may be a bit dearer. Which means more money on top, and more of an incentive for them to do the deal.

bought them from the States (never again) .....!!!! first sent a set of cheap Chinese copies, new set of "genuine Spanish webers" are apparently on the way. Don't think i'd want to deal with the company any more than I already have. Will probably build the engine with the 40's and then change up to 45's at a later date if they prove not to be up to the job.
