Hiya,

I am Rob, new to Forum and as the title suggests have never owned a Z.

I am planning on buying a 240 or 260 (but probably a 280) next year all depending on what my budget stretches too so thought I'd join and try learn some stuff first!

Hello - welcome.

Most of us never owned a z at some point - although the knowledge available on here sometimes makes you think some drove from the womb.

Stick with it and enjoy.

Cheers!

so I’m looking in Classic Car Mart from Feb 2021 and they say a price guide for a ‘good’ 260z is £7500.

That seems remarkably cheap as I can’t find any at that rate.

The 240 is priced at £22,000 for good which seems about right though.

Welcome chap! If I had done what you have before buying, I would have ended up with a much better car for my money! But then I’ve had immense fun putting mine right so no complaints!

As any will tell you, the most important aspect is a solid as rust free as possible body - there is a good reason why they are so rare!

Engines were cheap to fix but are getting pricier by the day especially as cast pistons are hard to find post covid impacts.

Look at some of the build threads and learn all about the common rust points / key issues to look for and ask questions. There’s no such thing as a dumb question, except the one not googled first :p

Also come to some events or meet Z owners local to you to take you out in their cars and to see the cars close up.

.

Just too funny and true. I literally spat my tea out!

That is way out. You'll struggle to find a good RHD 260Z for less than £20k and a good 240Z is going to be closer to £30k. By 'good' I mean one needing no work but perhaps not concours.

Are the prices for MK1 Escorts that way off as well? those magazine price lists never seem to get regularly updated and are next to pointless.

When a car is rare like S30s price guides are not the best way to judge an asking price. Our cars vary considerably in so many ways, it's not like choosing an MGB from a selection of 50 on sale.

Best to join an owners club like this and ask.
