It's actually a 'GS30-D' model 'Nissan Fairlady Z-L 2/2'.

Thinking about it as '260Z' or as being "based on a 260Z" is mistaken. We won't understand these cars properly if we do that. Far better to embrace the fact that it is a Japanese market model and that it has its own identity, parts and purpose.

If it is the original red (and never painted) it will be #110, which Nissan called 'Grand Prix Red' for the Japanese market in 1974. Japanese market models did not have the paint code sticker on the top of the radiator support which was seen on Export models.

The carburettors appear to be the original Hitachi HJG38W-8 type, which are actually a very good design and are not to be confused with the Hitachi HMB46W type 'Flat Top' carbs used on contemporary North American cars, and which have such a poor reputation.

Looks to be in great condition. I'm fairly sure I've seen it in Japan at an old car event some times in the past, as the owner-applied front arch protectors are very distinctive.

Whatever you want to call it, looks a really nice example of the 2+2 S30 model.
Well done on purchase OP and great to see worthwhile collector quality cars being imported.
One owner, low miles and original paint - doesn’t get much better than that :hurray:

Are all Z-L's suffix '-D'? Is there a non-suffix version of the GS30?.

'GS30-S' = 'Nissan Fairlady Z 2/2' ('Standard', no frills model)
'GS30-D' = 'Nissan Fairlady Z-L 2/2' ('Deluxe' model)
'GS30-DA' = Nissan Fairlady Z-L 2/2' ('Deluxe' model with Automatic transmission)

Of course, the suffixes are not seen anywhere on the car itself. It's only on factory documentation and sales information.

There was a big choice of showroom options in Japan, so it starts to become rather complicated to decipher original spec of a car depending on what option boxes were ticked when the car was ordered new, and what modifications it had later in life. All part of the fun...

That '2/2' emblem is an important distinction for the Japanese market cars. It is emphatically 'two by two' rather than 'two plus two'.

The white canister was used for emissions and I think it contained charcoal beads or something. If you follow the tubing round it leads to the carbs via some sort of sensor or solenoid that is vacuum operated. I disconnected all mine as I couldn't see what purpose it served and I heard so much negative stuff about the emissions controls on the Zeds. There is a separate dryer for aircon which is black in most cases but I don't think you have aircon judging by the lack of outlets on the bulkhead near the battery.

Learnt something new myself today about the different models. My vin plate just says S30 followed by the number. You might want to check the vin on the plate against the one stamped on the bulkhead near the brake servo.

It is a stunning example though. Well done for picking that one up!:hurray: Probably difficult to tell because it is displayed in Kilometers but what is the mileage on it? Those seats look to have been hardly ever used. Mine had 48k kilometers on the clock but the seats were wrecked. The one thing you are going to need to be careful with your speed when you get to drive it. The speedo is in km/h with no mph conversion so it is difficult to keep to the various speed limits unless you are well versed in the conversion. I couldn't cope so changed my speedo for one that reads MPH to stop any speeding tickets. If you want to keep the original speedo, I would advise getting a speed app on your phone and using that as a speed reference.

'GS30-S' = 'Nissan Fairlady Z 2/2' ('Standard', no frills model)
'GS30-D' = 'Nissan Fairlady Z-L 2/2' ('Deluxe' model)
'GS30-DA' = Nissan Fairlady Z-L 2/2' ('Deluxe' model with Automatic transmission)

Awesome thanks!

If S=Standard, D=Deluxe then on a Z-T does the J stand for something specific?

White plastic bottle, mounted horizontally, is the Air Conditioner Vacuum Canister:

Black steel Fuel Vapour Canister, mounted vertically, looks like this:

The 'S' and 'D' were there from the beginning in 1969 and made sense as 'Standard' and 'Deluxe', but some of the other suffixes are a bit more nebulous. There Be Dragons!

Some 'experts' will have you believe that the 'U' in HLS30-U stands for 'USA', but Nissan was making the 'HS30-U' at the same time, so 'USA' doesn't stand solely for USA...

I wouldn't be too worried about the later production suffixes if I were you. It all starts to become alphabet soup when you get as far as the S31 models. Your list looks pretty good to me.

Yours should be 'GS30', followed by the body serial number. It should match up with what's engraved on the firewall.

My mistake, It does say GS30 - just checked a pic of my VIN plate and matching engraving on the firewall. Interesting info about the aircon canister. My aircon is disconnected and all the bits are in a box in my garage but I will need to know where it all goes if I want to put it all back together. Probably just make do with opening a window! At least with the 2+2 there are 4 that open.

The fuel thingy was never on my car. Must have been removed by the previous owner.
