Lol.

There is nothing in that spot nor is there on the door jam, nor is there on the dash.

VIN on the 'Carte Grise' (French registration document) is actually the chassis number....

The VIN is stamped on the bulkhead above the rocker cover. Should also be on a plate on the bulkhead by the battery.

Hi guys and thanks.

I only have chassis numbers i.e. HGS130- 164739.
This is stamped on a plate on the bulkhead and etched on the bulkhead itself (by rocker cover).

The VIN i.e. KHLS130JFTUBC1WYH etc etc is in neither of the two locations (dash and door jam).

Not a massive deal but wanted to know the car's info...🧐

Then it’s a 79 to 81 car, which would tie in with the rear brake calipers you have. See the article below.

Brill, thanks Huw. Looks like it is no longer a 1983 Datsun!
How do we poor few, so bereft of information on the car, ascertain which options we had!?

Calipers are happily cleaned and awaiting install by the way. A bit of time hence but thanks again 👌

fyi, these cars don't have chassis numbers, because they don't have separate chassis'. They just have a VIN.

Hi Jon.

My car only has the number HGS130-164739 on it. I will therefore assume that that is its 'VIN'.
Huw seems to be intimating that the earlier models only had this number and no other.

The above number, via a basic search leads me to believe the car is a 1980.
On the old Carte Grise it is listed as an '83.

I'll remedy this when I re register it after it passes its 'MOT'.

My focus on VIN (traditionally a 17 character code) was to find out more about options etc.

My previous experience has been with General Motors cars where the VINs are very informative of the myriad options that may or may not have been chosen.

The above number, the so called Chassis number (not my nomenclature) is uninformative at best unfortunately.

Oh well!

Thanks all.

Yes, HGS130-164739 is your VIN. I make it around April 1980. This assumes approx 1,870 cars/per month produced, based on the numbers in the chart.

On my DVLA V5C Registration Document the vehicle number is listed as follows: "VIN/Chassis/Frame No. HGS130-12XXXX".

FYI: it looks like your car would originally have had the same 2 tone paint scheme as mine:

Thanks for the info!

Beautiful car. I love two tone.
My car was originally blue and don’t know about the bonnet being original or not.

If we had more descriptive vins then we could tell! 😂

Door back together and going on today!
Thanks all.

Any chance of fishing it back up with a bit of wire, then get read with a magnet?
Thanks for the message.

My neighbour has a few magnets!
Will have to try that. Good idea. Fingers crossed it works because otherwise I’ll have to cut holes in the car AGAIN! 😂

Whilst I'm messing around with bits of coat hangar and magnets (😩) does anyone have any spare door trim?

I have realised that the passenger door rusted so badly as it was missing the exterior trim that runs between the window and the door skin!
Just a giant hole there for water to go in!

Here is a pic of the driver side trim piece in situ (with sexy sticker in place also 🤘)

Many thanks as always and apologies for this never ending thread!

🍻

To celebrate day 1 of paint prep here are some drawings of what I wish my car would look like but will fail miserably to actualise!

Hope you enjoy.
Stay well all.
