Hi all,

Initially thanks to Jon Billings for validating my account while i scratched my head trying to figure out why i wasnt receiving my validation email!

So short story long, i recently purchased a 1972 UK RHD 240z on ebay after being goaded into it by friends, my dream car, ive always wanted one and i accidentally ended up owning it, but a bid is a bid so off we went to essex to collect it. The car in question had been dismantled in 1997 and dry stored seemingly after a small crash involving the front NS resulted in the front of the chassis rail dissintegrating.

Got the car home, check oil pressure, check powers, clean up points, add carb cleaner and fuel - SHE RUNS! However, this is now a matching numbers UK car in need of full resto, and i want to build a resto mod, it would have been rude. So i kept all the panels and RHD bits, measuring a few to reproduce along the way, and i purchased a fully welded shell that was ready for paint (which after a complete chance chat with a current zclub member is already known on here?) so that i can build up my own RHD car the way i want it.

So price agreed on buying the shell, and price agreed with a chap called George to sell the matching numbers shell for restoration, it looks like everyone wins.

So here i am, on the advise of Philip Alty (who was the chance meeting member) after collecing an mx5 bootlid and him offering me a beer and 2 hours of chatting to a stranger later about MX5's and 240z's i made a point of joining today so that i can start being more involved in the community (he spoke highly of you, dont worry).

Plans are to document my build, ill be fitting a brand new MR18DDT engine (Nissan/renault engine fitted to the RS300 megane) with direct injection, twin scroll turbo etc. and hopefully remanufacturing a number of parts where i can. The first of which is the RHD wiper motor linkages to see if i can make something a bit more accessible than original parts!

Welcome Josh. I don't think I've heard of anyone fitting an MR engine so that will be interesting to see.
How will you make it 6 cylinders? did @Rushingphil not tell you that was the rule? :jester:

He didnt explain the rules, dammit, ill just have to cut a couple off the daily and throw them in the boot, counts right?

Yeah the MR engine range is proper new stuff, i originally looked at the MR16 which is the 1.6 DIG-T engine fitted to the juke, but 300hp sounds beter than 200hp; in for a penny and all that.

Hi and welcome - big plans!

The first thing to get right is the VIN and registering the car. So as I understand it your first car is going to be a donor car for the second shell? Your second shell is basically your new car and it is that VIN that you need to retain. Is it a RHD shell too?

Big plans indeed.

Both cars have their own V5s so there is no worrying there, correct, the new shell is also a UK RHD car. Both cars are basically abandoned projects, the fully welded and jigged one is a car that was done and the owner essentially had life halt plans hence it being available, its just in primer ready for prep and paint, so ill be using it as my base without having to worry about any rust. It was just sold as a totally bare shell with panels available at extra cost, while they are good panels i have some from the first car i bought and i probably wont get it finished THAT quickly that panels are my biggest worry.

Essentially weighing up panel cost vs buying the new shell left me about £3000 extra out of pocket but i didnt have to do any welding, id say thats a fair price to pay to not have to pick up the mig.

That aside, probably use a BMW 6 speed gearbox, allowing me to not have to mess with the shell at all, as they use a similar cradle mounting as the datsun does, and as it has a remote shifter and the 4-banger has 2 cylinders missing i will have total flexibility to mount things to be as minimally intrusive as possible whichis nice!

Hi Josh,

Good to see you found your way here :)

I did advise RB26 IS the correct choice :D

Looking forward to following your build thread
