Depends on what you’re going to do to the engine, whilst out of the car.

It’s going to take two/three hours to remove the engine.I could bring my recovery truck and deliver to the body shop/welders,when removed. Would also be useful if others were there to help.

Have you had anyone who really knows about Z’s look at the welding required? ie Geoff.

I have some parts to bring to Bristol, Would be good to see Mike, and if you’re not far from Geoff I could nip round and see him.

Steve

That would be amazing Steve. Would really appreciate that.

I’ve had Geoff come and see the car and also tweak with the engine. I definitely need the chassis rails replaced.

I only live 10-15 minutes from Geoff. Was thinking of taking my car to the same person that did Mikes RB 240z bodywork but he’s not got back to me with a price for the job with the engine out. I hope others could help when the time comes ;)

Neil I'd give a bit of thought and planning to what your wanting to achieve. I think you mentioned the engine needs to come out because the chassis leg needs replaced (as opposed to weld repaired) this being the case then the new chassis leg will then need primered and painted as will the attached inner wing where the chassis leg has been welded on, so your now into painting at least one inner wing, which as you've got the bulk of the engine/gearbox out it now makes sense to repaint the whole engine bay. You've already mentioned you also wish to clean out the engine bay and refresh it's contents, notice how these things tend to grow... I guess my question is could you not repair the existing chassis leg until time and budget permits you to do the full job that you would prefer to do?

Your correct. The chassis rails needs to be replaced as it’s rotten and it will need primer and paint so the engine has to come out.

It’s not safe to drive until that’s done so I unfortunately need to do the job all at once.

Which is why I might aswel refresh and rebuild the engine. It’s a big job I know and the costs has definitely mounted up all at once. :(

Just a little update.

SoI have decided on a garage I want to take my car to for the body repairs and to be sprayed after. It’s a local guy who has worked on a friends 240z and after checking out his work it’s pretty decent and the quotes pretty reasonable for the amount of work I want done.

However the issue I have it getting the engine removed and needing the help to do it.

So the body shop guy has said he can pretty much start as of next week which I feel is alittle short notice as the engines not out yet. However as there is plenty of work on other areas to get on with regards to sorting out the bubbles and rust I think it might be wise for me to take the car to him to work on it and then remove the engine with the help from some forum members at his place which isn’t far from where I live.

Neil has kindly offered to lend me the engine hoist.

Any who are knowledgeable to help remove the engine. Please let me know your available dates and times to help so I can plan ahead would be great.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Val
If you can wait until the second weekend in Feb,I can
Come and remove the engine, have a hoist and tools.

Would you have somewhere to store the engine?

Steve

Second work of Feb is looking pretty good to me. :) but need to confirm if it’s ok for the bodyshop if we take the engine out over at his workshop.

I’m back in the UK,Feb 4th,hoping we could sort this the following Sat 9th.

Would prefer to come early morning, if we have to take the car to the body shop first wouldn’t be a problem.

Wish I wasn't the other side of the country, I'd try and help! Lots of members your way though, I am sure between you , you can do it -

Hats off to 8658kv for the offer. It isn't difficult with the right equipment and being methodical, just a few hours time.

No problem with the engine lift but this would have to be sorted before the 4th as I will be out of the country for 5 weeks. The lift is in fairford at the moment. Although I don't need to be there or need it back in a hurry

Cheers,
Neil.

Would love to give some help (except heavy lifting) but won't be around on 9th Feb. Did you manage to get a stand sorted yet? If you have the engine out it would be daft not to give it an overhaul at the same time. it would be miles easier to do that with a stand that can rotate it as you can then take the sump off and check bearings etc. They are pretty cheap on e-bay. I would also advise getting hold of a copy of 'How to rebuild your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine'. Much better workshop manual than the Haynes.

I rebuilt my L26 a couple of years ago and they are fairly simple engines to work on even for a novice like me. Happy to help you with that side of things if needed. My advice on taking the engine out is label up wires etc. as you go and take plenty of photos so you know where everything goes when you re-install. Also, check the gearbox input shaft oil seal for leaks. If you have oil in the bell housing, it may need replacing which you may also need to take out the gearbox. No point in putting a new clutch in (and I would advise that) if you have oil in there otherwise it will ruin it.

Hello Val and Neil.

Bristol is awash with Z’s! Not sure how I missed this thread.

Best of luck with the engine Val. It really is a very straight forward job. As Paul said I have an engine stand if you have a need for one. I can’t give you a hand as I have prior commitments. But your more than welcome to borrow the stand. I’m over in Whitchurch.

Cheers

Thanks Steve..

I’m thinking it might be ok to drive the car over so he can start working on it otherwise it would probably be better to trailer it over and take the engine out. As I have no knowledge of removing any engine i’m hoping a few guys can all get together to make the job much easier.

Early morning is definately preferred aswell.

Dunno where fairford is but do I need to pick up the hoist or can you drop it off to me preferably? If it heavy or can I load it into my car by myself? Would be good to have your presents there to help if available Neil. :)

Thank for the offer, I will definitely take you up on that offer. What did it cost you to rebuild the engine? What’s required and replaced, best place to buy new seals etc and which clutch?

Depending on my finances I may have to leave the engine on the stand until I can afford to rebuild it all before putting it all back in.

Hi Huw.

Thanks for the offer. Whitchurch not too far away. Can definately come and collect that if it’s not too heavy. Are you in a rush to have it back as the engine might be on there for a while. Gonna be several months at a minimum. Hope that’s ok.

Message me you address and number.
:)

Hi Val

Nope not in a rush, as long as you don’t take as long as left my engine hanging on it (10 years - long story). No it’s not heavy. It’s in pieces, just bolts together.

I’ll drop you a pm.

Cheers

Huw
