Modern S30 Project! 2nd stage Brakes and Suspension

The Installation Begins

After months of fannying around with other things I have finally made some headway into getting the suspension and brake upgrades fitted.

Along the way it was nice to see that my cars's previous US owners 'maintained it regardless of cost':D :D

I also poured more oil out of the strut tubes than was in any of the dampers. I wondered why it was a bit bouncy to drive and would change lane if you hit a bump in the road;)

Anyhoo the crowning glory is this cotter pin replacement alternative that we could all learn from......

I believe its rebar tying wire and yes you could pull the castellation cap off over the top! Thank god for tight hub dust caps:eek:

In order to get the rear hubs out I knew I needed to buy a CHEAP slide hammer but couldn't find one so I decided to make my own:D

Don't think I'll be using it for bodywork somehow;) works well on the hubs though!:D

Stripped the suspension off the car, the front taking only 20 mins a side, with everything coming undoing just as it should:bow: and the rear taking nearly a day beating and heating the life out of the rear hubs to get the spindle pins out:(. Finally leaving me with these

Next job was to demount and remove the old springs and dampers and to fit the strut adapters.

The front struts cut, the new sleeve notched and cleaned up ready for welding

The rears where far more simple to do

And finally all of the hubs and sleeves ready to go for welding with something that has a little more grunt than my ickle welder

Incidentally the weight difference between old and new is fairly significant considering how much of the hub remains with this upgrade, 6.6lbs for each front strut and 7.2lbs for each rear.

There's hope I'll get this car under 2800lbs yet!:D

Camber plates and control arms next!

Looking good indeed!

The top nuts on my front struts are well and truly stuck/snapped off, so now I'm looking for options. I have some new springs which came with the car so probably won't go the coilover route and save some monies. At least I could get clever and make some new ones if need be.

I'd offer to give you the spring hats off of the old struts but I am keeping them for a similar problem I have with my 260Z truth be told.

Have you tried nut-splitting the stuck ones and then rechasing the threads when out with a die? Perhaps welding stud back in for the snapped off ones or is the metal just too far gone?

Sorry, meant the 3" odd diameter nut that holds the damper inside the strut :)

Ah, sorry, my misunderstanding!

Well I do have the clean rust free strut tops you could have if you wanted to cut and weld the strut tubes?

Well I now have my hubs back from the welders and after a little cleaning up of the front pair before painting, I decided to have a little trial fit.

Still need to weld the camber plates in and sort some hub issues out but I was pretty happy with the whole package (Understatement):D :D :D :D :D

Just another 3 corners to go!

Looks great :) Just make a tidy job of the welding! :D

I've gotta figure out a plan for my front suspension. Will probably just cut the tube out and have a new one welded in.

Not wanting to put a downer on it, but why does it say "FL "on the front right tube in the pic?:conf2:

LOL:D Cos I reference the car from the top and front and not from the drivers seat!

I like to be different;)

Yeah the camber plates are going to be finished in flush so they look like factory solid strut tops (Hopefully!);)

I can't praise the neat sleeve and threaded tube solution from AZ enough, very easy to install and adjust. Ride height can be raised 1" and lowered 2" without any effect on spring or damper travel.

Cheers,

Steve

They certainly look the bizz how's it looking now?

Not much difference to be honest:(

I have a slight wobble on one of the front disc faces, approx 0.5mm, been trying to arrange to get the disc re-faced before I bolt it all up finally, that and the distraction created by a new Z32 arrival:D

However I have been trying different wheels, as you do;)

Opinions?

18's perhaps a touch overkill!

But purely from an aesthetic side, if you are going to 18" rims, you need bigger brake disks to fill out the space...imo

Agree entirely - there is nothing worse than huge wheels and puny brakes.

(although more often than not, it's the boy racer brigade in their Corsa's and such who are most guilty of the crime - "check out my 18" rims" "yeah man! don't they show off your pink 2" rear drums off nicely" ).

Fair point Bryn, Rob, looks like I'll have to stay with 16"s:)

To be fair the setup doesn't look quite as puny in real life with the calliper on. Perhaps I should have gone with the 13" disks after all??? :D :D

Cheers for your views guys!
