Longest Running Restoration

Had a shock when I found my tax disk yesterday, 01/01/95. The year I took my 280ZX off the road to do a 'few' jobs..... 16 years later its still in bits, but it is getting better.

Is this the longest running resto, or is there a lazier ****** than me out there?

I love to know.

Cheers!

Huw

Hell, you win hands down mate..
I took two years and thought that was a bit on the long side. Seems fairly normal now,

Perhaps NZeder over here in Kiwiland might be a contender. It's definitely over 10 years, maybe longer.

16 yrs.......... my ****
Got my 240 when I was a kid at 20yrs old.
On the road and legal, bought it for 500 quid.
I had left home in my teens and went down the country to do a coachbuilding apprenticeship.
Came home and gave the car the best paint job ever.
The car looked like a bespoke 240 to look at, I learnt some new skills and even though the car ran well I thought **** it I'll take the engine out strip and rebuild.....did that and then thought while the engine was out I would tart up the engine bay.
The chassis rails in the engine bay looked perfect but I noticed a few rusty bits so I thought I would tackle them before the got worse.
Once the engine was out I found after poking with a screwdriver the chassis rails were not as good as I thought.
Whilst looking perfect I found after scrapping some paint off, a picture of a chicken....... the tops of the rails were cornflakes boxes with some seamsealer around the edges
Anyway I am 42 now so if it is a race to see who is the shittest at fixing cars It's probs me.

Sounds a very similar story - I've got one of those magic screwdrivers that seem only to find more rust in really awkward places (windscreen scuttle, outer/inner wings, floor, chassis rails & suspension supports - well it is an early 280ZX after all). One of the many reasons the car has languished in pieces for so very long - thought it was finished, found more rust - got fed up.
Still I've learnt to weld, spray and fabricate stuff because of it. But all thats behind me (ish) and am pulling ones finger out to get it finished. I've done more in the last several months than in years, got the bug again.

No about the same - I think 95/96 mine came off the road too - so 16/17 year now I have lost count lol.

Ok you make me look it up...22 July 1995 was when the last WOF (MOT to you UK guys) expired. And I know I took her off the road about 3 months prior to that so that make 16 years and 9 months.

And if that is not enough I have purhcased another 260z 2 seater project car from another zed guy that has been off the road for 8 years but this is the year they both come back on the road......

Apparently the guy who owned mine before Terry bought it had been at it for 14 years, It only took me 15 months to get it up and running and that's only because the guy painting it took so long.

You've only partially saved them you know, if they're not a running concern. :p
