Yep.........and the first one there digs the lats. !

Dan Dan the Lavatory Man.

My gearbox is out at the moment, yes again!

Sean do you know of any places in or around the circuit where Lee and I could hire pedal cycles? Lee took bikes to last years Le Mans and found some great viewing points on the outside of the circuit? No I'm not putting them on my roof dolly!

Get one like mine, stick one of DJS30s' lightened flywhells and clutches in - never touch it again.

You have a pm re bicycle.

Got my tickets today Sean, thanks. Those tickets give me access to grandstands and paddock like last time don't they?

Gearbox sorted, electic fan fitted and working so just need to check the camping gear now. Sean, I'm going to do an accurate fuel consumption check this time so I can prove you doubters wrong.

For those who are camping at Le Mans for the first time - take some 6" nails for tent pegs and a hammer not rubber mallet, I'M NOT JOKING!

This is a fantastic event - in 2008 I really enjoyed it.

When you say hot, how hot? Is it likely to get as hot as its been over here - like, nearly 30! or hotter.

I should be alright as I checked my cooling system last week and there was definitely water in it.

Temperature in the shade today south of Le Mans was 32°c, surface temperature on the road was 55 in the sun.

Hints :

don't just run with water, add a coolant.
check your hose quality - the slightest doubt - change them - carry spares and a fan belt and water and oil. check your oil level too ! Fit an oil cooler ?
Have an electric fan with a variable (adjustable) thermostat and ideally a manual switch inside the car
don't be afraid to run with your bonnet open (opened from inside the car whilst moving)
keep the revs down, especially where you suspect having to slow down and queue (toll-booths, known bottle-necks, traffic lights etc)
if you've got a std fan and removed it - consider fitting it for this trip

if all else fails - turn the heating right up onto the windscreen (not your shoes 'cos your tootsies will melt)

Where I was standing yesterday (in the sun) the surface temperature was 142 but we were re-doing the road with tarmacadam........

Food glorious food.

Sean,

I'm quite happy to taste the local cuisine, except escargot oh and I have no wish to deprive frogs of there legs. So what is available close by or at the track? I have been told that some people are taking frozen English dinners that they will warm up each evening!! I would prefer to get some shopping done when we get there to minimise what I need to get in the boot.

I understand that there is a tradition of a BBQ in the evening but don’t want to travel with Meat frozen or otherwise especially considering the potential for hot weather. So again would rather get something local.

What are your thoughts?

As for the showers, if they work im not bothered I have used showers in various camp sites in my time and have a fairly good system in place to cope. Unlike some who dont intend to wash at all and just use baby wipes????

Mike, the showers/toilets were fine in 2008 and operated/cleaned by private people who like a little tip now and again. People at the Classic are well behaved and polite.

Food, like you we are stuck for space but there are Carrefour supermarkets in and around Le Mans (closed on Sunday though).

We wont have a BBQ with us just small camping stoves. I find the disposable BBQ ok.

I was surprised by how few food retailers there are in the circuit on race days.

Sean, it might be a good idea to remind people about the road laws in France i.e. warning triangles, high visibility jackets, bulbs, not dip to left etc

Aren't you advised by the AA and all ?

Obligatory : warning triangle, spare buld kit and reflective vest - this last which must be within the car and reach of the driver.

Recommended : first aid kit and second reflective vest.

Don't buy the hugely expensive bulb dipping kits (£7-15) but get some black tape and tape over the places (clearly marked) which dip your lights to the left, allowing them to shine straight ahead and not into the eyes of on-coming traffic.

Don't take the piss when speeding, especially in built-up areas and also where the limit drops to 110 from 130, 90 from 110, 70 from 90 and 30 from 50. If they want to nick you or have a directive to make examples - they will !

On the M-ways, don't speed a few kms before tool-booths, look out for bridges and service exits and if someone flashes you on-coming, it isn't 'cos they think you're a Volvo with day-running lights or they like your car - there's a bundle of cops up ahead !
