Is this a record?

Yes, I think that is a record. The forum went about 40 minutes without a new thread about a car for sale

I really don't see the point on all of these threads questioning peoples adverts and prices, I mean what's the point?

I'm well aware there's much cheaper cars out there and I know I wouldn't personally pay that sum for that car, however the seller in entitled to ask what they want for their car. If someone is willing to pay that price then great, both parties walk away happy. An item is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay, its not as if the seller is forcing this on people.

Its hardly like there are more of these cars still being produced, and there's not an infinite supply of mint condition S30's for those in the market. If you want crazy prices then look at porches, in the last 10 years Austin Healey's have over doubled in price! People are willing to keep buying these though...

I see far too many people these days criticizing the value of cars across different communities, you may not think its reasonable however that's what its worth to someone else. Prices of these cars are on the way up whether people like it or not its a matter of opinion as to whether people believe it to be reasonable or not....

The point isn't to question - the point is to highlight cars for sale - point !

This forum and therefore club should be the first point of call for any prospective buyer for the best advice.

Some adverts have been shown to be selling cars whose descriptions were less than accurate so posting them here serves a constructive purpose.

I'd love this one to sell at £40k - do you not - are YOU all mad and dreamers ?

This car has been the subject of many discussions on here before.
Yawn !
Potted history for anyone interested.

I imported this car so know it well and I have no connection with current seller despite their over familiar advert intimating otherwise. They do not know the old boy I bought it from in Georgia from Adam I can guarantee you that.

It has been for sale since I sold it two years ago for £ 11k.
JD Classics were the first to re-market the car shortly after at £ 50k  then £ 40k, then it was advertised for months earlier this year on Car and Classic at £ 29,995 still no takers. Last seen at Silverstone Classic Auction end of July where a huge potential audience at the sale decided it's value lay at a final bid of around £ 20k. Unsold as the seller wanted nearer £ 25k. Would have been a good buy somewhere between those two figures.

So now suddenly it appears back on the market just a few weeks later and we are expected to believe it is now worth double £ 40k and not pass comment ?

Well, now that is appreciation, inflation or dreaming as Dan said in his opening post

As has been said, a car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. When there is only a limited number of a desirable item the price will rise as the desire to have one of them increases. I believe they are still an undervalued item but they are getting expensive so maybe they have reached the limit in todays market. I think the value of a 240z as a great classic sports car you can drive and enjoy has already passed. The better ones that are unrestored/unrepaired/or painted are already to valuable to drive every day so to me are no longer desirable but to others who just want an object are very desirable.

And there's the problem with cars like the titular one, the aforementioned pair for 26k, and others discussed ad nauseam recently - people aren't willing to pay what's being asked as the prices have been pumped up to unrealistic levels as people try to talk up the market and/or jump the bandwagon.

The market will self-correct as those cars languish for months unsold, pressuring the asking prices down to something approaching a justifiable, realistic appraisal. With the odd exception of someone with more money than sense and/or who doesn't do their homework and gets monstered. Of course, if they are happy nonetheless it's their money. Just as long as they prepare for a hit on resale!

The discussions about price and details do have value as they often reveal issues that call into question asking prices, identify potential pitfalls and bring up history such as the car here and its opportunistically massive markup in two years...

As Rich speaks of doing homework and the importance of these threads highlighting a car's history for the uninitiated here is the inside info. that will get you a gold star.

This car may have 56k miles on the clock and frame but it is not documented by service history or records so hearsay.

I bought it with a blown engine and a good friend/Z specialist in the States replaced it with a non original to the car rebuilt L24 unit he had around that had done a much higher mileage. The gearbox is also not original to the car either.

These factors definitely affect value when asking prices reach these kind of levels and imo should be mentioned in any advert as important material facts.

Price may be down to what someone is prepared to pay but value is a different matter.

A nice car but similar quality can be bought for much less than the asking price here.

I still believe that the LHD 240Z market in the UK is for project cars and therefore at sub-£10k prices.

Trying to sell LHD Z at inflated prices in the UK market is plain daft and wasting everybody's time.

Perhaps these sellers expect continental buyers to be watching the UK ads ?

I get calls/messenger questions asking if I have any more cars for sale. These are all from people in Europe. Obviously they only want LHD and as Sean knows, they don't look on UK sites and from what I gather, no one looks on ebay. IMO the main market is for LHD cars and its not in the UK. You only have to look on the facebook s30 related pages to see how big the scene is outside of the UK.
