Inlet manifold coolant system 240Z SU's

I have found that my standard Californian 240Z with SU's has not had it's Inlet manifold coolant system connected, I noticed no problem when driving the car but am wondering whether to get the system back together as I now have the manifold off the engine (one of the pipe fittings has sheared in the manifold). I gather it was there to warm up the carbs during cold starts and cold weather but once warmed up did little else. Any thoughts on the need for this system would be appreciated.

Inlet coolant flow system is frequently blocked with rusty silt and doesn't do much even if connected up. Unless you plan on driving in extreme winter conditions I wouldn't fret about reinstating it

Disconnected mine and it has made the engine run better. It seems like the extra heat reduced performance and occasionally made it 'pink' which it no longer does. Even in cold weather, it starts ok but you need to ensure your choke works properly or you may have some issues.

I am doing the same on mine and I recall reading in the zclub archives (which I can no longer find) someone saying that beyond the usual explanations of cooling, avoiding icing etc, it helps keep a constant inlet temperature.

However given mine only ever comes out when it's warm and dry, it's going!

Agreed with Mr F on the rusty comment - you should have seen the colour of mine and the corrosion inside the pipes - I guess someone forgot to add anti-freeze at some point in its life!

If I may hijack the thread - is it worth taking the middle pipe out that links the two sides of the manifold or is it more hassle than it's worth!? It would just look a lot neater.

Thanks for the replies gents, yes seems a system not worth having so I am going to blank it all off. The connecting pipe does look a bit ugly so that might come off too!

Removed mine a few years back, it was completely blocked in several places, all it was doing for the engine was making it look untidy

I found a thermostat housing that doesnt have the outlet for the pipe to the manifold, so thats neater for a start.

And I havent yet, but i will get some screw in blanking plugs and remove said through pipe and exit stub on the manifold at some point too.

I know it was ages ago but you don't happen to have the link for the housing with the blocked off outlet do you?

Afraid not, it came from abroad somewhere (not USA) and I've not seen one advertised anywhere since!
