I'm going 1JZ

Alternator fixed and now charging. I say fixed. We broke it during disassembly whilst getting carried away with a hammer and had to buy a new one!

Iain drove it to the meet in fourways, had a brilliant time but it’s now developed an awful vibration.
Everything pointing towards the clutch/flywheel.
Can’t see anything wrong with an endoscope but looks like the gearbox is going to have to come out once again!

Need a new diff mount and other bits and bobs that don’t seem to appreciate the stresses they are being put under as well but really need to sort this vibration which is stopping it being driven.

Fun times!

You'll be there soon enough.

Hopefully no engine or gearbox removal after that, because I know thats a pain in the ass.

Well it’s broken!

Somehow the pressure plate had shifted slightly and bent one of the dowels in the flywheel.
Some really odd hot spots which I really hope haven’t wrecked the brand new clutch but as some of the locating holes are now oval im not confident.

Investigating further, the flywheel has 7 thou of runout which apparently is too much so we were looking at getting that sorted, then noticed that part of the ring gear had slipped forward by around .5mm.

So - Flywheel definitely needs replacing. Hopefully we can come up with something for the pressure plate as £400 for a couple of trips hurts my soul!

I ended up buying a new flywheel, found a new genuine Toyota one and some ARP bolts.

Before I buy another new clutch we are going to try to rescue the one we have. The clutch plate is fine. The pressure plate has a few hot spots but doesnt look wrecked.
The issue is with the pressure plate mounting. It seems that the mounting surface wasnt properly flat so it didnt have a decent sized contact patch. Bolts managed to loosen enough for it to slip which enlarged the dowel holes.

Current plan is to make the dowel holes round again and machine some dowels to match the larger hole. Also straighten the mating surface out. Hopefully we can get is reasonably balanced and then do the bolts up to 9 or 10 ugga duggas.

Wish us luck!

Not updated this for a while. New flywheel and clutch fettling was a success. Flywheel that was on there turned out to be a much thinner and lighter one when compared to the genuine Toyota one we put on.
Vibration all gone and doesn’t slip. Much nicer to drive as well.

We then hit 30 degree weather and it got WAY too hot.

So moved the fans from behind the intercooler to the right location behind the radiator and removed the inspection panels.
Helped a lot but still getting too hot, specifically affected is the fuel. The 044 pump is gettin hot and as the fuel gets hot, the pitch changes which is worrying.
Bit more work needed to sort it but its running great at the moment.

Here it is at a cars and coffee meet yesterday and the bugs it collected. IMG_0342.jpegIMG_0340.jpeg

Long due an update. Enjoyed the car all summer, made a couple of cool things.

Main one being a boost and AFR screen in one of the switch blanks so we can keep an eye on it. We don’t have clever management. Simply raising the boost and hoping it doesn’t melt.

Around October time the original turbos decided they had boosted their last and exploded.
Sat in the garage feeling sorry for itself while I collected parts, sent the boost pipes and valve covers off to be cerracoted, new gaskets, plated pipes, lots of cleaning and have started putting it back together.

New hybrid turbos, huge downpipe (will need a gentle hammering here and there the fit) and we will have it back on the road soon!

Huge downpipe won’t work, flanges aren’t flat so went back to the standard one. Saves needing to mess with the exhaust.

Painted the boost pipes and cam covers. Just need to cure and can be clear coated.

Tiny annoying problem with the right side repeater working intermittently.
When I did all the wiring, everything was really accessible. Once the panels etc were put back on it was less so.
Tons of time pulling tape off looms to see what was going on I found one of the pins had pulled out of the connector. Tab inside was broken so new plug and back together.
Quite pleased that after messing with nearly every wire on the car that was the only problem after a season!

Starting to get there now.

Turbos on, everything painted, cam covers back on.
Will have oil in it again soon!!

Japfest in a few weeks so need to get a move on. To be fair, the weather has really slowed progress as not been able to get the painting done.
