Thanks everyone - this is what I ended up with.

It's my sheet of aluminium with a sheet of this rivetted on.

I did some tests with my temp sensor on my multitester, and in my not that rigorous scientific test, the shield managed to maintain a temp difference between exhaust side and carb side of about 20 deg C (stationary in my garage)

Right up until my cooling fan cuts in, and heat the carb side up by 15 deg.

So next step is to get another sheet of the insulation material and make some kind of cowl to duct the hot air under the shield.

I bought a set of individual heat shields for my Dellortos:

I got them from EuroCarb, but I noticed they were cheaper in their eBay shop than their web site.

Jon. That always works best - I really can't see the point of those 'drip-trays' sold elsewhere and frankly, Paul, those 'shields' niether.

Next step Jon as you said is to block off the hot air being pushed onto the carb side of the complete shield.

Yeah, I do hear what you're saying Sean. The thing is, I'm not planning on tracking the car and it has no shield whatsoever at the moment so I reckon that those will be better than nothing.

Once it's running and I've had time to spend some hours on the road in different conditions I'll know if I need to do anything better. I hope not because I like the fact that the shields I bought are subtle and not look too imposing under the bonnet.
