Gearbox issue

Not usre if I have posted this in the correct section of the forum, but hopefully somebody may be able to help me.

I am currently working on a 1989 z31 . It has an auto gearbox and is a non turbo.

The car has been stored for a number of years and when I got it the gearbox wouldn't engage any gears at all.

I checked the fluid and it wasn't registering at all on the dipstick. So I added enough oil to cover the minimum mark on the dipstick and now it will engage all gears except reverse.

When its in Neutral I can still push it backwards or forwards. But strangely I can also push it when its in reverse too?

I haven't given the car a good drive yet though as it isn't roadworthy at the moment, but I am going to put it on Axle stands and try to get it through the gears whilst in the air.

I have read on various forums about a reverse checking assembly, but I think this is just for the z32 ( and I am not 100% sure if this is even on an auto model. ) - I am new to the zx's so any advise would be welcome.

Would people's thoughts be that the gearbox is basically knackered? Or maybe that the oil is still low even though I have put 5 litres of gearbox oil in.
