Hello all Z fan her my problem . took the 280z yesterday for a blat and i great time was had by all . Sunday thought give it another run so reconnected the battery and did the normal start up . it never starts first time so cranked it a little but no start . had a look at the 80a maxi fuse and it had blown so replace it and it did it again. must be a short but where ? anyone got a picture of the starter motor wiring as i think it could be wrong. also do you all disconect you batterys every time your not driving it? had this problem a few weeks back but it cleared up until now . hope the usual gurus can help .Chris

That happened to mine a year or so ago. Turned out that it wa one of the battery terminal wires was loose and frayed. Every time I cranked it over, the extra power through the cable blew the fuse. Replaced the terminal clamp and that sorted it.

Trying to understand this.

So are you saying you have an 80A fuse in the main starter circuit?

Why do you disconnect the battery, which not just get a trickle charger and connect it? (Unless you have a garage with no power - or no garage!?)

Before the thing goes up in smoke I would invest in an auto electrician, specialists exist for a reason.

The POS lead from the battery goes directly to the starter motor and has no fuse. The wire then goes from the starter terminal to, i believe one of the fusible links, it's possible though it goes direct to the alternator, cant remember.

If your blowing an 80 amp fuse instantly, there is a major short somewhere!

I have a battery cutoff switch, which i use when the car is not being used, this completely isolates the battery and minimises parasitic drain, 5-6 months and there's enough juice to start from winter slumber!

Yes it the black 80a one i have converted to maxi blades . car was running fine but i think theirs a bad earth had a look this afternoon and it just blow it without any cranking . going to take a look at all the connection tommorow . just a quick question on the starter a have 4 connections first the big earth to the starter to gear box the spade to the ignition the a have a live red and another black but do i need 2 earths? the starter earth though the battery and body ground . will take a look at the alternator also . could this be a fault with the voltage regulator . if this dont work may have to get a pro in dont want to burn the thing it the bad ground . hope you guys can point me in the right direction thanks Chris

Yes you need the two earths, the main one obviously comes from the battery, the other one then earths the body to the engine, unless you have a decent earth strap from the engine to the body else where, the one from the starter is the only one earthing the car to the battery. Saying that yours is a 280z, so may be different to the earlier cars.

'tis going to be an expensive hobby if you have to go to a 'specialist' every time something goes wrong.

TBH I googled 'automotive electrician' before I replied and was astounded to see they even still existed, even more astounded to see they existed as 'classic car automotive electricians' that's a niche field.
