This evening, I totally got Jon’s point about the compression rod acting as an ARB spring - while continuing my audit of all bolts and bobs of the front end / steering and suspension, I took out the two securing bolts of the compression rod without first undoing the big nut at the back of it. Which then resulted in the CR springing up and annoyingly spinning every time I tried to undo the nut by the rear bush.
I had to nearly hang off it to bring it down so as to put a bolt back into the suspension lower arm to keep it from spinning while undoing the bush nut. Bear in mind I have a rubber bush at the back and poly at the front, so it should be more pliable than poly at both ends. That is quite a lot of stiffness being introduced just by one poly bush.
Also had to use a rotary wire brush to clean out the rust from the cups on the chassis. Post treating and painting, I’ll be lubing that part up with grease also before putting back together. Then I’m NEVER driving it again if there is the smallest hint of water in the air and only washing the car once every two years on a 32 degree summer’s day!! It feels like the car was “designed” to have lots of water traps everywhere!
Feeling very fed up with the very necessary surface rust removal of the last few days.
I’m also not happy with the gaiters I received the other day so I have to wait until Monday for the Pug 205 ones to arrive. More rotary wire brushing and painting to come then. I guess it’s good Zen master self discipline and makes you sleep better knowing surface rust has been dispatched before it quietly turns structural. My wife was asking if I shouldn’t just strip the car down and have it blasted / dipped - God I married the right girl!! [emoji41]
