This evening, I totally got Jon’s point about the compression rod acting as an ARB spring - while continuing my audit of all bolts and bobs of the front end / steering and suspension, I took out the two securing bolts of the compression rod without first undoing the big nut at the back of it. Which then resulted in the CR springing up and annoyingly spinning every time I tried to undo the nut by the rear bush.

I had to nearly hang off it to bring it down so as to put a bolt back into the suspension lower arm to keep it from spinning while undoing the bush nut. Bear in mind I have a rubber bush at the back and poly at the front, so it should be more pliable than poly at both ends. That is quite a lot of stiffness being introduced just by one poly bush.

Also had to use a rotary wire brush to clean out the rust from the cups on the chassis. Post treating and painting, I’ll be lubing that part up with grease also before putting back together. Then I’m NEVER driving it again if there is the smallest hint of water in the air and only washing the car once every two years on a 32 degree summer’s day!! It feels like the car was “designed” to have lots of water traps everywhere! :(

Feeling very fed up with the very necessary surface rust removal of the last few days.

I’m also not happy with the gaiters I received the other day so I have to wait until Monday for the Pug 205 ones to arrive. More rotary wire brushing and painting to come then. I guess it’s good Zen master self discipline and makes you sleep better knowing surface rust has been dispatched before it quietly turns structural. My wife was asking if I shouldn’t just strip the car down and have it blasted / dipped - God I married the right girl!! [emoji41]

Ah, but i get the distinct feeling you didn't enlighten her as to the cost involved with said strip and dip...... that brings back stag doo strip club memories lol! :p

Well her daddy did that to two cars so she’s very well aware of all that it entailed.

Joking aside, tonight I was telling her that I may want to do all the shocks and after asking about the cost she told me to get on with it and stressed that now is the time to do it while I have the time, not next year!!

Tonight’s little effort resulted in taking apart the entire front suspension and steering (minus the rack of course).

I finally get the chance to replace the sieve that is my splash guards with the fully powder coated ones I bought off PMAC 7 years ago!!

The bolts were so badly seized that I had to drill them out.

Quite startled at just how bad one of my front shocks was and how UTTERLY seized my ball joints were. I always thought my steering was unnaturally stiff and feedback wasn’t great but now I know exactly why! One was extremely hard to move and the other one in the photo was impossible to move without clamping it ...

I’m experimenting with keeping a video diary of the work rather than taking lots of photos so here is tonight’s attempt ...

A RockAuto + an MSA order later and I’m c.£1000 lighter. I did of course order a few extras, it wasn’t just ball joints and shocks. I decided against the springs as I like my car’s ride height and I think the shocks will sort out the soggy bottom syndrome under fast cornering / compression. My tie rods are just fine but I ordered new ones figuring I can compare and if not needed to replace, then I will put them up for sale with the rest of my soon to come garage decluttering sale.

In other news, I don’t know why but the wiped off stalk bugged me, so I “restored” it!

Also I found play in the splines of the collapsible steering column and have ordered what appears to be an unused or much better condition column than my current one. However despite $79 postage it won’t reach me until July, but I have my hands full and the current column “works” just fine. When putting it back together, I discovered that the bolts turned to chocolate even before torquing - thank goodness for left handed / reverse action drills that pulled them out without fuss.

Time for bed at last. Ah, need to shower first, damn that washing business!

Is the car now living on the drive then for the foreseeable?

Yup! Thankfully the weather is pretty decent. I may just replace the front bearings for fun while waiting for the orders to arrive. I may as well have a look at them while it’s all apart.

Are you using your lift or is she sat on axle stands now? leaving the lift in view might invite unwanted attention from any passing 'travelers'!

The Pug 205 boots arrived today and I have to say, as much as other people have had success with them, I’m in two minds about the wide end. It’s 40mm sealing onto a 36mm housing and a bit floppy without the supplied tie wrap on it being pulled extremely tightly. This makes me wonder if moisture will eventually work its way in. The original one I took off had a measured 30-32mm wide end and a 10mm small end. Both ends were resisting being pulled off without the clips.

Since my car is going to have it’s nose up in the air for some time, in the interest of science, I have ordered the Montego ones as the fit seems much better, I.e. 12mm onto a 12mm shaft and 36mm onto a 36mm housing. Although they may be a bit long. Am I being fussy? Probably, but “I gots to know”.

I’m not sure if you can over grease a rack but it was virtually dry!! Any small amounts that came out were hardened. But with patience and a syringe, I managed to get quite a lot of the fresh stuff in there. Then I over did it before sticking the boot on.

Now all I need to do is get the blessed nut off the other side - I CANNOT make it move!!

After borrowing my neighbour’s 22mm spanner and turning the nut the correct way (left hand down) the thing shifted without complaint with just a couple of taps of the hammer and 30secs of MAP torch heat to help it along.

Note to self turn nuts in the correct direction!!!

Well, to celebrate that success, I treated myself to an exciting afternoon of taking the under seal and paint off the strut towers where it looked rusty and going back to bare metal. I have to say, I have been remarkably surprised at how little rust there was. It was all surface rust with nothing to worry about.

These weren’t the final photos of what I stripped back as I went even further but right now they are having a soak, after being lathered in rust converter. I love the way the metal goes reddish blue then purple.

Now after picking out all the bits out of my hair and teeth, I have to put the kiddies to bed and will likely give them a coat of paint before bedtime. (The bare metal bits - not the children)!

Home schooling starts again tomorrow so progress will be slow again.

what colour do you paint them before bedtime? Is it actually legal?

I hear orange is cool! [emoji1787]

In fact the bath water was orange after our dirt biking antics earlier today.
