you should do the revival Rob. Its just ace in every way..............

Yes I know. I love Historic Racing but I dislike how many cars are 'trashed'. These days there is just too much money available to repair cars.

When I watched the last GP there were arguments about drivers forcing other drivers off the track and the penalties awarded. In the 'old days' drivers didn't do that or try to overtake on the outside because of risk and respect.

Are you sure about that Rob? My memories of Mansell, Hunt, Schumacher, Eddie Irvine, Alain Prost etc are far less rosey. Or have I missed the point you are making? I haven’t really watched F1 for 10 years so I’m not up to date with what you’re pointing to. In some ways it’s become a little too metro-sexual for me. Too much face creme, designer hair and spoilt brats. Compare it to MotoGP and you’ll know what I’m trying to get at.

We religiously do the members’ revivals (the normal one got a bit too big and busy) and I absolutely LOVE the way they race properly. In the paddock I once asked a Ferrari pit crew about dents in their 250GTO and they were telling me how they just take moulds off each other’ cars and rebuild them for the next race. It made me think thank goodness people are wealthy enough to do that for my enjoyment ;)

For me the St Mary’s Trophy has always been the most entertaining race: with Minis, Cobras and Ford Galaxies etc all jostling about!! So much fun to watch!

By old days Ali I didn't mean the Mansell era I meant the OLD days of no run-offs, no kerbs or track limited issues, no seat belts. They raced on the Black bit and tried not to cause a crash because of the dangers. 50s, 60s even 70s. FWIW I think world championship rallying is too quick now and too sprint-like. The last rally the Safari was a shadow of it's former self.

I suppose each generation has thought the same as times change. Of course the safety is much better now thankfully but that makes the drivers more inclined to push the boundaries.

That’s a great point Rob. I recall Hamilton being interviewed by Clarkson and describing his 150mph off and backward slide into a tyre wall as “quite nice”!! Not many would have live to tell that tale in the “earlier era” or even the 80s I imagine.

it is gentlemen racing. Once we showed a private replay of an incident which left one guy giving another a very large cheque. Also, given that lots of these cars are basically shadows of the cars they were, I quite enjoy it.

The spectacle of some of the most expensive and not instantly replaceable cars, genuinely still being used as intended is amazing.

you should make a point of getting down.

I saw a Ferrari 250LM trashed at Le Mans Classic (Porsche Curves, 2008) that was upsetting. Bike racing is worse though - the rider gets hurt.

Generally where mortality comes into play, racers are less likely to run each other off the track.

And sometimes you get crazy incidents like this that idiots get banned for ...

My son and I went on Sunday, our first time.
We really enjoyed the experience,

Must say we would have liked your access to your hospitality @AliK.

Was great to see a wide variety of cars generally, was very tempted by the Lotus Emira..

Good to see the red Arrows... havent seen them for atleast 10 yrs

Such a shame to have missed you! :( Next year!

The enclosure was very convenient and a bit swanky, with a full-English for two of us costing £50!!!

Yes that Lotus is a gorgeous bit of engineering / design but you know what my second thought was? “That would be a total sod to wash and polish”!!

The red arrows were great! Their radio transmission on the other hand were rather odd though and nothing like what I expected. It sounded like the guy was inhaling a helium / NoS mix while flying!! :D
