Exhaust options? 240z / L28

    Hello everyone,

Having nearly completed my restoration, it’s probably time to consider the exhaust. The car is mostly standard - 73’ 240z with L28 block. The baffles in my current exhaust are clearly gone as it rattles a lot.

I’m curious what my options are, and if I can source something in the U.K. / EU?

I’m not looking for any performance upgrade in particular, but that wouldn’t hurt. Engine / carb is standard. Single pipe to rear back box. I would like to keep the twin pipe look at the rear, even if it is just cosmetic. Pic below.

Please - welcome any advice, or other threads to read or places to consider purchase?

    Cheers, Graeme

If you're constrained by UK/EU and want to maintain a sensible budget then ZStory (Sean) is your best bet.

He has various streeatble and more serious options and also sellers a "JDM Muffler' which will keep the twin stacked exit pipes that you like.

    Thanks Mike, Mark.

    Hello Graeme.

    Your options then :

Worldwide - Fujitsubo Legalis from Japan, see here on RHD Japan :https://www.rhdjapan.com/search/?q=fujitsubo legalis s30

USA - various lines of varying quality from the Specialist Z stores but as far as I know, no twin vertical pipes : https://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/classic19

    Europe :

    https://www.abarth-exhausts.com/datsun/

    Me* : https://www.datsun-zstory.com/zstory/a-propos/

UK : Best guess would be a custom-made job.

*My prices and some photos attached for info.

Are the "Twice pipes" from the Z Store just two mufflers together? I was thinking on putting two mufflers, one on each side, but the fuel tank is annoyingly on the way to be able to put a second muffler on the other side.

The fit and finish on Sean’s is pretty awesome. I was worried about it all being too close to the transmission and diff but it’s never knocked yet, it’s a nice tailored fit and way better than the MSA version I had before that used to ground over road humps and fast compressions.

I had the pleasure of hearing the JDM (twin pipe) muffler on Woody’s car during a blast round my local roads and it’s a pretty grin inducing mating call over 4K rpm! Yet very civilised and sporty sounding below it.

I have the single classic muffler and while it sounds very nascar at 6000rpm, the twin sounds more evil! ;)

    +1 for Sean's systems.
I bought a couple of complete systems (Street-Sport manifolds and JDM back boxes) and they are very well made with nice welds as well as being very reasonably priced.
They are easy to install with V-bands at the front and sound great!

There is place in falkirk that will custom make whatever you need.
The car would need to be left there to get work done.

Fujitsubo for top draw off the shelf quality and a twin exhaust fed by twin pipes, as thats the only way it should be :)

They are welded together but you could cut them to fit seperately......but then you'd have to custom-make the pipes to them from before the front diff mount. They have no centre box (resonator) and are therefore VERY loud. The quality now is 'cheap' - I had a system fitted back in 1991 and it was much better made than the one sold these days. It also hangs quite low and is obviously too wide to fit through the stock 'hole' in the rear valence.

When you came to mine last summer Mark, I don't know if you noticed it but someone from the houses across the road came and took photos of your car and it wasn't because she was interested in the twin muffler :EXTRAlol:. I didn't mention it at the time because we were having far too much fun to bother. Some people just don't have enough to bother about.

    Hi...

Thinking I’ll probably go with one of the zstory setups. Fast-road / JDM vertical twin. I’m curious how you guys find it noise wise? I’m not really doing it for a performance gain, rather I need a new system (rattles in the current one) and the JDM twin look is a must.

The blue car in Seans pictures is now mine .

Previous owner sent me this video of it ( with exhaust )driving through the Dartford tunnel .

Tunnel aside - I 'm very happy with the exhaust .
