Engine splash pan

I still have my splash pan on my 1972 240z but I was lead to believe that the very early ones did not have them as standard. If my memory serves me correct they were fitted to aid the cooling as the very early ones were overheating without them.
I may be wrong as I sometimes am.

This is one of those times. They were called 'Splash Pans' ('Splash Board' in Japan) because they protected from water and/or mud being splashed up from the road. Any cooling effect was secondary, or incorporated into the design. They were not any kind of afterthought.

I said I might be wrong. It looks as though I am this time. That was the story I was told when they first came out all those years ago when I use to service them etc. in the 1970s.
