Wired correctly tach should work.

I had mine done by an auto electrician - it was a Lumenition kit. Tach worked fine afterwards but I have read of people on here (one quite recently) saying there's had stopped working after the swap. Just got to be done right.

is the 280z dizzy a direct fit or does it need anything else to fit

The lumenition kit is available from Mike Feeney. You get the gubbins that goes inside the old dizzy cap plus a little electronic gizmo box that fastens inside the engine bay More than that I cannot tell you because as you can probably see, I am not very technical! Cost a couple of hundred pounds I think and has worked great on my 260Z.

So long as the 280zx dizzy is complete with itscorrect coil, it's direct fit and very easy re-wire.

But it does need to be complete complete - you need the mount/adapter thing from a 280zx too. it won't fit on the S30 adapter.
