E88 heads

I picked up a spare E88 head yesterday and I'm wondering if it has a place in a performance L28 build. From what I gather there are a number of different versions of this head which makes no sense to me at all. The one I have has the small chambers that resemble P90 so good squish. Its a later head as it has FI cutouts on the inlets. Also has the P90 round hole markings over the exhaust ports. So, is this a better option than a P90?

got a picture John? I'd expect an e88 with closed chamber would be a very early one, so not FI....

It looks to me like it's had a big skim.
this is mine, and its had a 1mm skim and has only 36cc Chambers.
yours will have good squish as you say, but if your chambers are similar size to mine, then your CR will be in 13s on your 3.1 with flat top pistons.

here's the pic of that mr30 head. I've copied it because its easy to miss in the viczcar thread. Its been worked, but the spark plug entry seems quite different.

It does, perhaps John's combustion chamber has been tweaked? his looks more circular and a bit relieved where the plug boss meets the head face and the image from Viczcar more angular/stepped?

The bit that drew my attention on the Viczcar overview was the blurb accompanying the pic, "designed for fuel injected L-series engines" and "it's kidney shape combustion chamber is similar to that used in the P90"

Yeah, I agree - the description is accurate, but the pics make it even more intriguing!

I’ll take some more pictures and measure the thickness today. I don’t think it came from a zed as it came from a place that does everything Datsun other than zeds. He doesn’t remember what it was from but the rear water outlet is totally different from what I’ve seen before.

Thickness is 106.4mm. Valves are 35/44.

mine is about 106.5 and has had 1mm off.
I definitely think you'd want to cc it before putting in on your 3.1!

Looks to have had a skim by how close the E88 is to the face.

Standard thickness is 107.9mm so been skimmed 1.5mm. Not sure if that’s good or bad.

So Johny, for comparison here is my late EFi E88 head with 40cc chambers and 44/35mm valves which sits atop an F54 block. I’ll see if I can take a photo of the E88 relative to the bottom of the block later!
