dizzy timing

i have a '74 260z but with the 280zx distributor. it's running a little rough & i think the timing is out and i'm gonna get it checked. but can anyone tell me what the timing / advance should be? or is it all done with a strobe light?. and does the setting alter the spark plug gap? i tried today to get the number on the side of the dizzy but could'nt make it out, but it's the one with the E12-80 module. + is it always true that the rev counter won't work with this upgrade as ive looked on other forums, especially in the u.s and it always seems to be the case.

You need to be aiming for 34>>36 degrees of advance at 3000rpm, but having said that your engine may like a little less overall or a little more overall timing

Set it, run it down the road, see how it feels, listen for any pinking and adjust accordingly

As for the rev counter issue, my 240Z rev counter has always worked ok with a 280ZX dist
