Differential breather plastic plug

Would appreciate some info. I have a standard diff with a yellowish (age?) looking plastic breather plug. The top round part turns around and around clockwise and anticlockwise with no effect . The plug body turns separately and again goes round and round in both directions with no effect.

Is the body of the plug supposed to be threaded into the diff OR is is it just a push fit ?

How does it do its breathing job? Is there supposed to be a small hole on the top cap or along the body ?

thanks

The breather body is a push fit in the rear cover of the diff.

The cap is actually designed to operate as a one-way valve. If there is pressure inside the diff it 'pops' the cap and is allowed to vent to atmosphere. The cap/vent closes under its own weight.

It is possible to take the cap off by squeezing it in the right plane and twisting until the tabs line up with the slots on the breather body.
