Advertising on the back of rally successes was big business at one time. The cars are too far removed from stock now.

Ironically enough, Nissan went on to take outright wins on the E.A. Safari Rally in 1970, 1971 and 1973, which might have appeased the editorial staff at Motor Sport magazine a little.

Yes, this editorial was written before those successes of course, so the wins were maybe life's way of 'cocking a snook' (or sticking up two fingers in more modern times) to the Motor Sport journalists!

They just missed out the word 'class' in the ad title but I wouldn't have trusted Datsun UK much - they (imo) hardly cared about the makes' reputation as maxi-sales.....which was after all their raison d'être !

We shouldn't forget the four consecutive wins from 1979-82, also badged here as Datsuns.

This would be the PA10 chassis- Nissan's most successful rally car to date.

Originally badged as "Datsun" 160j but became "Nissan" Violet 1980 onwards...
