Red.

Red Is a great choice. All my Z's have been Red.

I'd recognise Mark anywhere now.:D

Superjakko I know Xactly what you mean! metallic paint is nice, pearl & anything else....But a straight colour or modern 2 pack (xtra laquer) enhances the already great lines on an s30.

A tail of woe!

I thought I'd share some of the frustration I'm having with these bloody doors of mine with you guys , It's good to share so they say :).

When I went into this mini restoration of my 74 260 I never envisaged that the bloody doors would be the bain of my life for so long, Or end up costing so much to put right, Not only where they falling apart at the seams but the window winder mechanisms has caused me no end of head aches thus far!

The winders provided with the car where totally wrong and could not of ever been fitted to these doors, Well not unless 12 years of storage made the doors shrink anyway :rolleyes:, I think what happens was the owner who started this job got hold of some 240 doors but didn't think to check if the early 260 winders would fit, Because they look the same as the 240 ones but aren't, So today some proper 240 winders turned up from fourways who I must say are a fantastic couple of guys to deal with, Very very helpful indeed and forgiving of my short comings as far as knowledge of my car goes .

This is the list so far, Give it another week it will probably be longer.

(1) door frame's had to be completely rebuilt

(2) two new old stock door skins fitted

(3) second hand set of latches because they where missing from the car (cheers Pete)

(4) 2 sets of winder winders so far :(.

(5) And I still need to find a set of door cards to suit as well.

Having a car that was only made for one year is a real pain in the arse I can tell you, It can't make it's mind up whether it's a 240 or a 260 :smash:.

Well as par for the cause the doors are still causing problems today, I went down the body shop to take a few more shots now that the grill is back in place this morning, And they're still having problems getting the doors to line up properly. I can see this tuning into one of those never ending problems that takes months and months to sort out, I may have to take the car to someone that knows a bit more about Z's to see if they can get them working better, I'll have to see how the body shop guy gets on with them today.

Anyway here's a couple of dusty looking shots for you.

On another note the quarter lights are also going to need a bit of massaging I think to get them to seat properly as well.

I also had problems getting my doors to line up, the passenger one still isn't perfect but got it best I could, I had to make up small washers to fit in at the hinge.................

try and get in touch with grolls as he had a hell of a lot of probs getting his doors lined up

Cheers, I thought it would just be a case of adjusting the hinges and strike plates but it seems to be a lot more evolved than that, I think the passenger door will need to come off again in the future and be twisted or bent into shape some how, It sticks out a bit to much at the bottom for my liking and doesn't follow the sill profile very well, At least the new winders work well and I can now open and close the windows smoothly lol.

I think the the rear arch repair panels where not fitted fantastically either and that may have a bearing on the door fitment as well.

I'm sure I'll get their in the end even if it means having it all ripped apart again at some point in the future, Hopefully the body shop guy will at least get them opening and closing smoother for the time being.

My problem is that I'm not very good at this type of work, Give me some spanners and an engine or clutch to take out and I'm fine, But I haven't got the patients for this kind of stuff.

when i did my doors the hinges that bolt to the pillar i had to space out with washers, you will need to do the same and this will correct the twist in your door and then try and get your wings to fit nice aswell,as for the quarter glass frames unless they were the original ones then they will be a pig to fit.a small file will come in handy.

My drivers door doesn't fit flush, it only stuck out at the bottom after the original resto but the last bodyshop that did a bit of front end work on it made it worse, it's flush with the wing though.

I'm a bit like you Rob in that I'd rather do mechanical work.

Mike could you explain this quote please mate, The quarter light is surrounded by a rubber so where do you file to get extra movement ?, I didn't fit them but I'd like to know how to sort out any issues when I get it home,

if you have got new rubber seals that fits round the outside of the frames it is better as they will be fatter than your old ones.the frames are bolted in with some small bolts so i used a small round file to allow all the holes to line up and to get a bit of movement aswell.the file was a about 3mm round.you will see what i mean when you have a look.

I've been up the body shop today and we've come to the conclusion that it's not the doors that are the problem now, It is in fact that the rear arch repair panels have been fitted badly :(, Plus the new rubbers have made both doors a bit hard to close.

To be honest I'd of thought that the body shop should of really spotted this issue before now, But I'm partly to blame for not having all the parts available to start of with, The plan of action now is for me to take the car back and carry on the refitting process over winter, Then it's going back to have the arch panels adjusted which mean all the welds holding them on to the door shut area and sill will need releasing so some movement can be had.

All that's happened is that the guy who did the welded pushed them in to far and they need to be moved out 5-10mm to get the door line right. It's never easy is it :(.

Once I get the car back I'll try and post up some pictures of the problem area for you guys to look at and comment on.
