The version that was sold to the general public (with the below part number) was bolted together. The ones used on the Works cars should be viewed on a case-by-case basis (variables included build date and first expected event type) as they had all sorts of extra work done on them including bolted-on mounts for spot & fog lamps and welded tabs underneath for mounting the front of the sump guard.

The horizontal was split into three pieces, with tabs welded at the cut ends and captive nuts welded to those tabs. The overriders simply had holes drilled in the sides to correspond with the horizontals, and bolted through. Pretty simple in theory. You just have to find the 'right' overriders...

Didn't someone sell a bumper like this through the forum a couple of years ago?

I think that will be the 'solution' I bought off Pete Mac. It's a modern design (Star Motorsport I think) not a 'period' style but it's very good. Not fitted but I have plans and lamps.

It worked as a solution but not quite the same in a few ways. Post up a few pics though Rob.

As I said it's a very good solution. I say solution because the front hinging bonnet does not make fitting decent lamps easy.

With any of these 4 lamp 'solutions' I think they spoil the uncluttered front of a 240Z and I would only fit them to a rally car.

This is one of my favourite s30's, its stance, road presence, function and willingness to stand from the norm.

I think it looks uncluttered, however I agree its not quite as pretty. its a bolt on though.

My brain is wired such that when I see added spot lights on a car, it immediately associates it with rallying.. it needs works style mudflaps at the rear if that was desired look.

However if it was a case of just being different, then target achieved :)

Why do you need 'pics' Jason if you know enough to say this? I don't have any by the way.

Do a photo-shop job on that car and put a standard bumper, number plate and no spot-lights to compare.

Just to remind me, show anothers way of a dropped bumper.

What do you mean Rob about Photo-shop? On the car i've put a pic of? It'd look like a standard(ish) s30 at that point?

I get your point, it add's a rally feel, a Monte rally feel. Its not about being different, I just like the presence from the look/being slightly unique.

And why not? Build what you like and not follow the norm.

To finish the look I would add the twin megaphone "works style" exhaust system that will be on the market shortly:thumbs:

Are you going to be selling? I don't think i'd want on on this car. I am going to do it as I want, its only bolt on so i'll have a normal style option also. :)

No. I understand our resident exhaust expert will be retailing theae according to a post on Fb

"Works style"? I wouldn't bank on too much accuracy when a single-entry, twin-exit rear muffler gets called "JDM".

'Works' is a moving target anyway.

Something I've always found slightly bewildered about in the S30-series Z ownership 'scene' outside Japan is the lack of recognition of a period vernacular of modifications for the cars. It's odd.

The S30's contemporaries - like Mk.1 & Mk.2 Escorts, Porsche 911, Triumph TRs, 105-series ALFAs etc etc - all seem to have an accepted period 'menu' of what looked right and worked right in period, and therefore work now. In a lot of cases these were factory optional parts and/or parts that were aftermarket in period, and with reference to race & rally activities. It sometimes slips into cliche territory, but cliches usually become cliches because they work.

With the 'Monte' bumper, we are talking about a period factory part which was designed, made and sold to the general public as part of the homologation process which allowed Nissan to use it in rallying classes where it would otherwise be deemed illegal. Nissan tried several different configurations when adding spots and fogs to the cars for serious rally work, but they were all deemed unsatisfactory for one reason or another (too low, too vulnerable, causing panel conflict etc) and so the 'Monte-Carlo' style or 'drop' bumper was their most practical solution. So it has purpose, and it has history. It's not to everyone's taste, but I don't see it as incongruous or ugly. Combined with other period-sympathetic mods it can look very purposeful and - with some decent lights mounted on it - would certainly work as intended on a good fast road specced car.

Here's what Nissan and its drivers found wanting in 1970:
