Changing a gearbox

I'm in the process of removing the gearbox from my 240z.  I've done one on a 260 many years ago and I seem to remember that once removed, I had trouble getting the unit from underneath the car - even with it reversed onto 'standard' size ramps.  Ramps are out of the question this time as a) the engine's in pieces and b) it's got a large non- standard front spoiler which bottoms out so I'm using a good old trolley jack & axle stands to lift the back of the car.  Does anyone know what kind of clearance is required at the back end to enable it to pass underneath the tunnel.  Doesn't look high enough to me.  I want to try and avoid perching the front wheels on blocks (I'm very safety conscious) as I'll be spending some time underneath it replacing the clutch at the same time. <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

I had the same problem when I had to do a gearbox a few years back with nothing but axel stands. Once the gearbox was dropped, I placed a full breaze block on it's belly so the trolly jack rested on top of it with the trolly wheels hanging over each side (so it didn't roll) and jacked it up under the diff'. This gave me the extra clearance to pull the gearbox out from the side of the car with a rope that I had previously attached. That way I didn't need to get under the car. Once out, the car was rested back on it's stands while I did the clutch and the same proceedure was used when the gearbox was ready for re-installation. I think the rear wheels were removed as well. It all sounds a bit dodgy, but really was quite safe.
